Mr. Aquarium Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 I’m bored and getting excited for the warmer weather. Let’s talk fishing! How you guys fishin deep grass beds. I have grass down to 20 feet Maybe more. Clear water. All sorts of grass, not just one type. I love fishing tubes, t rigs, jigs swimbaits on bottom. 2 Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted January 25, 2023 Super User Posted January 25, 2023 Heavy spinnerbait! I love slow rollin a 3/4-1oz double willow along the bottom in deep grass. 2 Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted January 25, 2023 Super User Posted January 25, 2023 i learned how to yank lipless and crankbaits thru grass last year. i was okay successful, but the shock of a bass grabbing a bait coming out of grass is kinda addicting. i started using 40lb braid and i could really feel when i entered the grass and when it came out the other side. my grass isnt that deep, not like yours. 8 feet down maybe? year before, i would slow swim a Magdraft freestyle for the same, " i cant believe that worked" shock feeling. the hits were big and dramatic. 2 Quote

The 2 places I have in mind, not a lot of shallow weeds. There’s some but most of the weeds are deeper. No emergent weeds. Just grass on bottom. You can see the bottom pretty easily and it doesn’t get weedy until it’s 6 feet. Some spots the weeds are shallow but they are protected coves. I was on a mussel weed bed hump in 19 feet of water. Pretty awesome spot Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted January 25, 2023 Super User Posted January 25, 2023 We have really clear water and plenty of grass. If untreated (lots of the lakes around here are lakehouse lakes and they get treated), 20' deep water will have surface weeds. One place I was graphing last year had surface weeds in 20' and had 20' of weeds growing off the bottom in 30' of water. For me, I don't bother with the deeper water as much. I know the fish are there, but I don't have the patience to sort through it. I'll stick to the 12' depths or so where I can find edges. I'll do my usual- start with something on top or near the top that's moving. Then something through the middle of the column that's moving. Then drag something along the bottom edge. A DT6-10 if its a clean straight edge, a chatterbait or spinnerbait if its a rough edge. A swim jig is great if you want to drop it into the grass holes or swim it through the edges deeper. 1 Quote
CM-fisher Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 In deep grass I lean towards a chatterbait or swim jig to cover some water, and then sometimes slow it down and fish a Texas or wacky rigged senko to be more thorough 2 Quote

Deep grass, ripping a lipless. Man, that’s something I wish I could do more. I haven’t fished lakes like that for a while. 1 Quote
Susky River Rat Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 Call me weird but I’ve never thrown anytbjng texas rigged. 2023 I am going to go play in the grass beds on my river with one. I’ve caught fish on the edges of them no reason why I can get a t rig in there and so some damage 3 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted January 25, 2023 Super User Posted January 25, 2023 Spinnerbaits, Chatterbait, Swim Jig, or a Rat L Trap. I like the jig because I can hop it across the top of the vegetation if swimming doesn't work. 2 Quote
5by3 Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 Go play in the thick stuff with a 1+ oz tungsten ? 3 Quote
padon Posted January 26, 2023 Posted January 26, 2023 we fish deep grass around here ALOT. swim jig to cover water. also belly weighted swimbait.my favorite way is to locate areas where the grass bumps up against hard bottom, rocks gravel etc. or those things cause holes in the deep grass edge. put a jig or worm down there on them.another favorite is a 5/8 or 3/4 jig get it down into the grass along the deep edge yank it out and let it freefall back in. gets reaction bites. 4 Quote
papajoe222 Posted January 26, 2023 Posted January 26, 2023 Presentation, for me, depends on what type of grass or vegetation I'm targeting. Regardless, I will start with something that will lay on top and I can hop or pop off the weed tops. Some form of soft plastic with as little weight possible is my choice for that. The second is something that will tic, or catch the weed tops that I can rip free (my favorite). If the weeds are sparse enough to run a bottom contact presentation, Mr. Jig and his brother C-rig get the call. Check out the edges (the tops are an edge, too) along with points, cuts and any structural changes. 1 Quote
softwateronly Posted January 26, 2023 Posted January 26, 2023 DJ 3/4oz swim jigs w/ a big EZ & a 5/8-3/4oz DJ Canterberry flippin jig w/ a beaver are my favorite ways to get after em. Working downhill, surfing the weed tops, the outcast chicken jig became a big player for me last summer too. Looking to add in a 6" fatty trash fish, flutter spoon and a 8" hags tornado on a mag shot caller at various points this year. Most of this happens on the clumps and edges in 15-25.' Large profiles have been much more successful historically, but I should push some finesse out deep on the slow days. scott 1 Quote
