The trash one isn't my beloved 51S, but the CQ BFS'17. The my older Conquests and Caltcuttas are relicts of a time when Shimano cared about refinement and ruggedness, in the same blend. Quote

ThatZX14Fella Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 My dream reel was/is the Calcutta Conquest DC. Finally got it last summer and it’s hard for me to even look at my other reels. It’s all I want to use, which is sad because I also have a Tatula SV and a Millionaire CT SV. Quote

Plan to flip with it. I had two of them a 7 and 8 speed. Both were incredible for 1.5 seasons. I loved them, then both became rough and I couldn't get them back to new smooth after cleaning, greasing, changing bearings. I switched to Alphas SV's to replace them on the same rods and haven't had an issue. The Alphas don't cast quite as far, but are better reels IMO and much less expensive. Quote

Good to hear. I love the 18. Hard to imagine the 22 would be noticeably better. I prefer the darker finish myself. Quote

It gets pretty cold in the hands during the wintertime though that's why I have the Chronarch and the Metanium for really cold weather. Quote

You gain 2 yards on average with the 22. He was casting a frog 131.22 feet roughly with the 18 and 137 feet with the 22. Not a lot of difference, but the 22 casts further. Both beat the Zillion. 19 minutes ago, Msl819 said: Good to hear. I love the 18. Hard to imagine the 22 would be noticeably better. I prefer the darker finish myself. If you're referring to the issue of the reel taking it's time to engage when the handle is turned after the cast, I have also seen that issue reported. Quote

He lacks it when comparing out of the box reels with one's already being in use for some time. Quote

The interior side plate needs regular oil for maximum performance. Doubt he oiled it. That alone could account for the 2 yards the 22 outperformed the 18. I think the point I'm making, don't give away your 18s in favor of a 22 if you don't want too. There isn't much difference. I was almost casting all the 50lb pp line off my 18 with a 3/8 chatterbait recently. Quote

ska4fun Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 https://www.alanhawk.com/blog/19isu.html Shimano must put a lawsuit against Allan Hawk!!! He presented a cheap design flaw in the pricey Shimano Stella SW!!! But it's not a design flaw, but a new technology, called UXGW - ultra-x-gapped-wobbling bail arm! What a shame, Allan Hawk!!! People did the same with micromodule I gearing! They were just as strong as grandpa teeth! Dan Thornburn was mad because Allan Hawk wasn't a Payolla-***** like Cal TT. Quote
waymont Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 I have two Aldebaran 50 MG7, and one CORE 50 that I love. All are pretty solid, and cast great. Fun to fish with. Quote
Johnbt Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 Top to bottom: Baitrunner Plus 6500 Triton Sea Spin Bait Runner 4500 from mid to late '80s iirc. Note the graphite spool. Note that Bait Runner is two words on the side. And last but not least an MLZ10. Aluminum from the late '80s. "Colfor" spool. 104 yds of 6#. Spool diameter = 1.34" And a Washington quarter, diameter = 0.955" Edited to add: The Bass Pro receipt for the 6500 Plus is still in the bottom of the box. 3/11/88. $56.94 plus $6.10 shipping. 1 Quote
