Super User bulldog1935 Posted January 21, 2023 Super User Posted January 21, 2023 On a Shimano thread, I'm not going to say no Shimano will cast distance with this - oops. and where do you think Shimano got the idea for MGL? ZPI first made aftermarket spools for them, selling rebuilt '13 Metanium as Z-Pride 1 Quote

Super User gim Posted January 21, 2023 Super User Posted January 21, 2023 2 Curados 1 Citica 1 Calcutta (muskie fishing) 2 Saharas 1 Stradic 1 SLX Just got the SLX last March, used it one season. I really like the big grippy rubber handles. I do a fair amount of fishing in rain and these things help. Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted January 21, 2023 Super User Posted January 21, 2023 1 Ultegra 1000 1 Miravel 2500 Both picked up this buying season. Bench testing was great - both are smooth and light with good drags. It'll be May before bass season opens here and I get to field test them. Quote

I've used my curado 71xg on a Dobyns Extreme 746 throwing up to 3/4 oz title shots in the junk with no problem, absolutely fantastic combo, once you get to the 1 oz mark and higher ,I think my Bantam XG is better suited for it ,but the 71 definitely can handle heavy weights. LCG Posted January 22, 2023 Posted January 22, 2023 I have owned the Stradic FL, Curado 200K, SLX MGL 71, and Curado MGL 71 K. Lately I have been liking some of the Daiwa offerings. The Alphas SV TW and Tatula LT specifically. I prefer smaller reels in general nowdays. Sold most of my Shimano reels, but still have the Curado MGL 71 K. Love that little reel. I have nothing bad to say about Shimano reels in any way. Very solid and smooth reels. Build quality is excellent. 1 Quote

The SLX MGL 71 was a great little reel that felt very free and smooth. Drag was very smooth. Handled a 20lb pike like a champ. However, as I mentioned earlier, I prefer small reels. The SLX MGL is a small reel, but the brake dial on the side does take up a bit more room than say the curado 71 MGL K that has the brake dial more to the front of the reel. This is a very nick picky thing on my part, I am seeking as perfect as I can find. I didn't like the thumb bar on the SLX, it has a raised edge on the side that rubbed my thumb and caused irritation. The Curado and Alphas are much better in that respect. Again, personal thing.. Overall they are very close though. I think the extra cost for the curado is worth it with the double supported pinion and a slight edge in smoothness. But again, I am looking for the smallest, most comfortable reel, that is solid and smooth. The Alphas is quickly becoming my favorite. More solid, but slightly less build quality. Mine has a small raised edge along the frame that I find annoying. The Curado has a screw hole right where my finger sits that also feels annoying. Can't win them all I guess But, that Alphas reel is smooth, tiny, fully capable of handling big fish. Control is the big gain, only baitcasting reel that I can skip with due the the SV brakes. But can also throw for distance on lighter brake settings. Curado is a great casting reel too, but I can't skip with it. By no means an expert. Slightly less weight as well. 2 Quote

LCG' assessment is spot on. I feel the same way about these two reels, my main thing is ergonomics/comfort in griping the reel, the Curado 71mgl just feels so comfortable, something about the SLX frame is different either wider and more bulky ,even thou it's still a small reel, again the SLX is definitley a winner in terms of comfort and performance but the Curado 71MGL is a clear step up. 1 Quote
Super User Koz Posted January 22, 2023 Super User Posted January 22, 2023 I like my Shimano gear. I have a Curado DC paired with and MH Expride A and today I just bought another Curado DC to pair with an MH Expride B. I like the DC's for night fishing when it's pitch black and I can't see anything out there because they are more forgiving if I miss the timing on thumbing the spool. I have a Curado K that I am pairing with a H Intenza that I also just purchased today. I also have a Curado MGL, but that's paired with a M St. Croix Mojo Yak. I also bought a Shimano World Pop topwater a few weeks ago but haven't tried it out yet. **EDIT** Oh yeah - I also have a Sahara spinning reel paired with a Falcon ML rod. Quote
marmooskapaul Posted January 22, 2023 Posted January 22, 2023 I've got 20 green Bantam Curado's 200/200B's. Like everything the same...lol. Quote
Susky River Rat Posted January 22, 2023 Posted January 22, 2023 3 Saharas (I feel best bang for buck) 2 sedonas 2 tranx 500 for musky I have one tranx 151 on the way as we speak. i am a Shimano guy for better or worse. They proved their worth to me with the tranx 500s for musky after I blew through and saw friends blow through other brands. I try not to be brand loyal but, they have been great to me. Now if I would ever start having issues with reels I would not hesitate to go to something else. I am very particular and clean/lube my reels 2-3 times a year. Quote
Captain Phil Posted January 22, 2023 Posted January 22, 2023 If you are a fan of old school round reels, the Shimano Calcutta was the best of the bunch. I still use a Calcutta 200 for spinnerbait fishing. 2 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted January 22, 2023 Super User Posted January 22, 2023 Out of all the Shimano reels I have owned....the Core 101 has been my favorite. I lost my first one to Davy Jones' locker and bought another off of ebay. I had my original for almost 15 years. I used it as my main jig and worm reel. I caught so many fish on it and used it for so long that it felt like it was part of my hand. For as long as I had this reel, it always felt like it was new out of the box. Luckily the one I got of Ebay was a little better. The orginal owner sent it to a guy for service and he replaced all four bearings with orange sealed ceramics and I think the AR bearing was changed as well. It is just incredible. 2 Quote
TN bassmaster Posted January 23, 2023 Author Posted January 23, 2023 i have an old shimano bantam like the really old ones that don't even have a thumbar and it still casts flawlessly =! Quote
