Jonas Staggs Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Looking for recommendations on good golden shiner lures. Any type of bait, hard, soft, swim, etc Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted January 16, 2023 Global Moderator Posted January 16, 2023 Check out Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper boot tail swim baits. They have a color they call “Shiner” but never used it. My favorite is their “Houdini” color which is close to it and which I have the Greatest success with. What they call it doesn’t matter. Super User casts_by_fly Posted January 16, 2023 Super User Posted January 16, 2023 If you just need the color and approximate match, sieberts has a golden shiner skirt color that is awesome. It’s a perfect match for the shiners around here. I have it in the tremor with a big clear with gold flake zako on the back and it looks great in the water. It’s about a 5” bait or so. You could go bigger with one as a spinnerbait. 3 Quote

When white or a shad color is not working this is what go to next. 2 Quote

Have it all rigged up to try this spring to simulate the baitfish we see here. Plan to put a shiner colored paddletail on it. 1 Quote

We don’t have a ton of golden shiners around and our water is always very clear so I haven’t thrown them much. Very situational lure for me. 1 Quote
Mr. Aquarium Posted January 17, 2023 Posted January 17, 2023 Highly recommend Real Prey swimbaits, he makes an exact bait for golden shiners. 7 inch made of silicone so they don’t rip. They can withstand multiple fish. Super realistic. I love his baits 3 Quote
Super User AlabamaSpothunter Posted January 17, 2023 Super User Posted January 17, 2023 I think any 6-8" multi jointed swimbait that looks like a Shad will work just fine. I fish a big 6" BD Shad exactly where I caught this 7-8" Golden Shiner, and that BD Shad has caught 3 fish over 5lbs from that same spot. What I'm learning about big swimbaits is that it's really about the size and profile of the bait. You want the big fish to feel it's a worthwhile endeavor to chase down the bait. Rainbow trout don't exist in countless place they are fished with fantastic success. You can see the tail of the BD Shad in the top right.....basically the same tail on the Shiner. To me the Shiner looks enough like a Gizzard Shad of equal size that it just makes it easy to buy Gizzard Swimbaits. 5 Quote

We don't have many either, but in the spring we tend to get some shad floating in cool weather and our shad have a little darker back on them, so I figure the Golden Shiner swimjig with a brown backed Largo Shad may imitate them pretty good. 1 Quote

I need to stay under 2 oz to mitigate anymore damage to my spine and shoulders, 7 inchers are a no go for me. My dog got ahold of a 5" rp perch and destroyed it. Grateful he ships them with jig hook covers, but that was $25 down the drain. 2 Quote

I love them, big 8 inch shiner, the 10 inch trout, mega shad, the 7 inch shiner, forage trouts, alewives etc. his baits are the only soft baits I’ll throw! He’s local, a good dude, awesome baits can’t beat it. I’ve fished hudds a lot but not any more! 3 Quote

Super User casts_by_fly Posted January 20, 2023 Super User Posted January 20, 2023 For anyone’s reference, the bladed jig on the top is a half ounce tremor from Sieberts (gold blade and tied skirt) with a zako on the back. Golden shiner color on the jig and I forget the zako color. It’s a pretty good approximation for a golden shiner. 2 Quote
