Tarpon Hunter Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Has anyone tried these and is one better than the other? I already have the Berkley Powerbait Gilly which I have yet to get a fish on but have had only limited time with. It looks great in the water. Quote
Super User Bankc Posted January 16, 2023 Super User Posted January 16, 2023 I haven't tried the Megabass, but I had a Savage Gear 3D Bluegill once (the soft one), and never got a bite on it. I eventually lost it in some brush and had no intention of replacing it. Another one of those baits designed to catch anglers, not fish, in my opinion. Even though there are a lot of bluegill in my lakes, I haven't had much success off realistic looking bluegill baits in general, other than an H2O Express 3.5 hard swimbait. And even then, I have to retrieve it so fast, that I doubt the bass know what they are biting. But it works pretty well when that type of bite is going. Now, bluegill patters on baits seem to work pretty well for me. As well as perch and trout patterns, which is odd since we don't have those in my lakes. But that's just one man's experience. 1 Quote
Jonas Staggs Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 I got the savage gear 3d gill in the big and small. Only fished them like once or twice, no bites. I bought them off tactical bassin recommendations but perhaps they are just pushing junk like everyone else. I have caught more on the storm bluegill. I got the berkley gilly and it's a total POS in my opinion. Definitely won't be buying again. It doesn't swim upright no matter how many stupid tricks you do, I finally rigged it with a jig head like a standard bait and it is now upright, but has little to no kick. Just pulls straight through the water. The only good action the bait seems to have is it's falling action, which might be good for flipping I guess Quote
Tarpon Hunter Posted January 16, 2023 Author Posted January 16, 2023 Years ago on a large farm pond I caught 30 bass, the largest 6 lbs. on the original Bagley small fry bream. Haven't had a day that good since. But I fished it back in October and to my surprise I caught an 8" bream. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 18, 2023 Global Moderator Posted January 18, 2023 Assuming you're talking about the Savage Gear Structure Gill that is similar to the Sleeper Gill. I have one that has been doing well for me this winter anytime I can find them around shallow grass. I've also done very well on their Pulse Tail LB gills but those are very different from the Sleeper Gills. 4 Quote
Tarpon Hunter Posted January 18, 2023 Author Posted January 18, 2023 Good to know. I was looking at the segmented Savage Gear 3D RTF Bluegill Swimbait Quote

I have the RTF with the paddletail and have done pretty well with it also, but it's more a straight cast and slow retrieve bait. The Sleeper Gill you fish almost like a jig, hopping it along the bottom. Quote

I hammered them using both last year including a couple 4 and 5 lbers on the RTF 4” bluegill in the bream color. They’re money! 1 Quote

torm Posted January 21, 2023 Posted January 21, 2023 I've seen people dropshot the gilly over beds, so its probably only good during spawning season if your bed fishing. While it looks nice I've haven't seen much success with it other than that. I too fell for the bait looks and bought a couple lol. 1 Quote
Tatulatard Posted January 21, 2023 Posted January 21, 2023 Gillly is an awesome bait. All you do is have to rig a 110 flat with a twist lock hook and slow roll it over shallow weeds and near cover like docks or trees. It will swim semi upright like a dying baitfish trapped near the surface unable to maibtain its orientation (ever seen a dying fish on the surface?) while also giving off panicked S swimming motions. Its a dinner bell to bass. I've caught a lot of big fish on it and had a lot of big followers. The savage gear 3d bluegill in the 5" size is also a great bait. It's like a slow sink soft bodied gantarel Jr with a deeper profile. Despite its 2.5 ounce size it doest crash as hard into the water as a gantarel so I like to use it around shallow cover. 1 Quote
