Super User AlabamaSpothunter Posted January 16, 2023 Super User Posted January 16, 2023 @WRB we're all sitting around the campfire waiting for a story, I'm sure you know this gentlemen? A week ago in Bass history..... 9 Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 16, 2023 Super User Posted January 16, 2023 Bill Beckum caught his bass using live crawdads fishing a well known area. I knew of him but I wasn’t in his circle of buddies. Danny Kadota and Bob Crupi were buddies and generally avoided both of them. Danny’s Tin boat fleet killed a lot of giant bass back in the late 80’s early 90’s camped out on Dry creek Elisabeth canyon point area. Stringers of big bass belly up looked like volley balls floating next to the boats. This time period with $1,000,000 reward for a new world record bass putting tremendous fishing pressure on both Casitas and Castaic. Tom 3 1 1 Quote

Tom So your 19.3 is among the top 25 biggest Bass ever landed I would assume. That's pretty dang awesome even if you didn't get the WR. 1 Quote

Tom Always good to get both sides of the story, do you think we will see another big fish come out of Casitas and Castaic, or do you think the drought, lack of forage, and fishing pressure has hurt the fishery 1 Quote

No, back then you had to keep the bass to let DFG measure and weigh the bass, couldn’t release them alive or transport the bass to authenticate a legal catch, no weights added and correct species. It didn’t occur to me to kill the bass and the top 25 list happen years later. Tom 1 Quote

Casitas isn’t getting much water from the Ventura River, only some run off as the local water board will not repair Robles diversion dam. Without a volume of water from the river the run off local water shed maybe toxic from fire retardants, doesn’t help the ecosystem. If crawdads and trout are restocked to provide more prey with high protein I can’t see Casitas coming back in the near future, it’s possible. Tom 2 Quote

Excellent Info thanks! and absolutely agree, it's been 3 years of bacteria outbrakes and I cannot believe how little they have stocked, I don't want to say incompetence because I don't know how hard it is to run a fishery, but visiting a dfg hatchery and a private one like Mt Lassen and Jess ranch it just seems the private ones are so much cleaner, healthier from better pellet diets, clean fresh mountain stream water, excellent filtration systems, and much more space for the fish to be less crowded than dfg. I'm not an expert but maybe that helps breed strong healthy fish that don't succumb to disease as easily. Maybe you know more backstop behind the situation Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 16, 2023 Super User Posted January 16, 2023 The problems started when hatchery raised sterile triploid Rainbow trout was stopped by court order to study the impact on native Steelhead populations. The DFG had to spend their budget studying all the waterways that had a history of Steelhead populations. This effort lasted about 8 years reducing budgets and raising hatchery trout put on hold or reduced. The Whitney hatchery had a breakout of whirling disease shutting it down a few years. Today Fillmore and Whitney are back in operation but with reduce production do to cutbacks in funding. Tom Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted January 17, 2023 Super User Posted January 17, 2023 Tom, Wasn’t Dottie the largest bass ever weighed , or were there others you know about in that size or bigger? 1 Quote

Witnesses could clearly see the white jig when she was brought into the boat and reported the infraction while Dottie was being weighed. Dottie was released as a result and not submitted for record status. It’s shame. Tom 1 Quote

She was found dead a few years after I've read, wonder if she went downhill those last two years, or if she managed to gain a pound or two. I've only seen her bloated dead pic. I still think Cuba might have a 25lb fish swimming around eating 18" Freshwater Eels. Now that it's opening back up to Americans, maybe we'll see what the rumors were about all these decades. This is the article I read on her.... World Record Chasers | The Story of “Dottie” the 25 pound Largemouth Bass – Bass Fishing Facts Quote

A much more positive way than is presently the case. It seems to me like they are much more concerned with finding and protecting a non-native mythical newt with three reproductive appendages. The vision starts at the top food chain, and our overlords have crosses in their eyes. 1 Quote
