Both of Karl Lagerfelds parents were members of the Nazi party

i didn't know that.  i looked him up briefly after reading that.  it seems that when the war ended he would have been about 8 yrs old.  i didn't see anything in his bio that indicated he supported nazi principles, other than the claim that he was associated with  what wikipedia called a "right wing extremist group" that opposed merkel's immigration policies.  i take that label with a grain of salt considering the source, and the fact that anyone who opposes globalism mass immigration, and the e.u. is automatically labeled a racist by the woke media.  i didn't look too deeply into them,  so it's possible i missed some things.  however, his quote that merkel didn't like was "You cannot kill millions of Jews and then take in millions of their worst enemies afterwards, even if there are decades between the events."  that doesn't sound pro nazi to me.   he may have been a racist, i have no idea. a superficial search of his bio indicates he was not.

either way, i didn't buy that cologne, she would put it on me, i let her do it because she was very hot, very talented, and she rewarded me for it.

I have an over-sensitve sniffer and cologne, perfume, scented soaps, scented candles, etc. make my head hurt!  Back in the days when most laundry detergent was powdered and came in a box, I could hardly stand to walk down that aisle in the grocery store because of all that overpowering scent.

When I was about twenty, a particularly hot and unknowing girlfriend gave me a bottle of Karl Lagerfeld.  I tried wearing it a few times and remember getting complimented on it, but I didn't do it for long.  As a matter of fact, that bottle is still in my bathroom cabinet, forty years later!  I don't know why I haven't tossed it...  maybe because it's fun remembering that girl and being in my twenties!

Dolce and Gabbana light blue. Sadly after getting covid it has never smelled the same to me since. I still wear it though.

Man that cologne is getting some attention in this thread. I mean, yeah, I like it too.

I did have COVID at one point as well. Freaking hated it, so I empathize with you.

Id like to add a comment that strangely, the colognes that I liked the most at first sniff are the ones that I really have to be in the mood to wear. Spicebomb Extreme and Ombré Leather are that way for me. But when I want to wear them, nothing else will do.

As far as my actually having it I felt worse. The headaches were the worst part for me. Now the fact after over a year smells are still different to me suck.

Sorry to hear. What else smells different to you?

Exhaust fumes, gasoline, garlic, urine, mint which for the longest time was very hard to brush my teeth. I’ve also noticed among those things like mint and garlic for example just have like an ammonia smell to me. I can’t really distinguish certain smells apart anymore I have to ask my wife. There is also certain things I really do not smell at all. It’s frustrating at times but, I’ve just come to accept it.

Put simply, fragrances are built with top notes, mid notes, and base notes.  Top and mid notes are what you smell most when you first spray them. These are the light fragrance ingredients that jump off the page. Fresh citrus (lemon and grapefruit in particular), bright green/herbal, and watery notes (light blue has a lot of that) are top notes. These smells are strong at first but die away quickly. The mid notes are what you smell after a couple minutes when the top notes have dissipated. Lighter woody notes, fruity notes, lots of floral notes all sit in that bucket. The notes you smell after an hour or more are the basenotes. These are things like heavy wood smells, resin, incense, spices, sweet notes, vanillins, musk.

spicebomb and ombré leather are both bigger intense fragrances. Spicebomb has a lot of spice but is also quite sweet are resinous also. There are minimal topnotes to it and it’s straight into the lighter spicy notes. A similar resiny sweet spicy fragrance is Gucci guilty intense. Halston z14 is an inexpensive alternative that is sold in drugstores. A higher end fruity spice version is Tom ford plum japonaise.

ombré leather is even more intense. It’s a classic smoky saffron leather. There are a half dozen like it, but all are more expensive that i know of. Tuscan leather is the original that ombré leather is based on and one I have at home.

I can understand why you went into the breakdown of top vs middle vs bass because of what I said about first sniff but I do already know about fragrances progress through the notes. I do think that both Spicebomb Extreme and Ombré Leather are fairly consistent from opening to base.

Seriously appreciate all that info nonetheless. Your breakdown of the colognes is really interesting.

Also interestingly, both of my roommates note a feminine feel to Ombré Leather that makes it seem like a unisex fragrance (and as you know, it is labeled that). I can understand where they are coming from. I still think it smells gorgeous.

Another comment I got from somebody while wearing Ombré Leather while I was sitting in my truck talking to them was “wow, your truck smells amazing.” The fragrance has this “new car” smell to it that people can pick up on.

yeah both don’t have much to the top notes and the top notes disappearing is the biggest change a fragrance has.

kinda funny...exotic,  high end chocolates are sometimes described in a very similar fashion.

which reminds me that valentines day is coming up.  as a former husband of a floral designer, i would let you guys know that long stemmed roses carry an insane mark up for this holiday.  for what you would pay to buy her long stemmed roses, you could get her a massive tropical arrangement that would be so big she probably couldn't pick it up by herself. if your lady likes chocolate,  you need to quickly order from here:

https://www.somachocolate.com

it's very expensive,  but you can't buy better chocolate anywhere on this continent.

if you decide to get some, try the dark fire for yourself.  it will change your opinion of what chocolate should taste like. i'm not even kidding.  beware that  a bar of chocolate costs between $8-$12 canadian, shipping isn't cheap because it's express shipped,  in a box full of cold packs.

I think OL is pretty unisex as well, there's almost this sweetness to it, which reminds me of fruit.

fortunately for me, roses are low on the list that my wife likes. Unfortunately though, her preferred are peonies (highly seasonal), hydrangeas, and lilies.

and she’s in Switzerland all of the time so her chocolate preferences are down that line.

I don’t wear Cologne but this immediately came to mind.

I’m usually getting sprayed by a skunk so no need for me to spend any extra

Skin Bracer smells like Vanilla and Mint. Nothing like what I think Jack would smell like. I imagine he smelled like leather, smoke and tobacco.

I like fresh, clean scents. My favorite is Curve Crush for men.

There were times I’d get in an elevator, hit the 12 button, it would stop on the second floor and some matronly 75 year-old would step in smelling like she fell head-first into a vat of Jean Nate. I’d walk out. If I stayed, I’d have a splitting headache by Floor #5.

That's when you press the button to get off at the next floor and do some crop dusting on your way out

I lost my sense of smell for about a month from covid. Hasn't been right since with certain things. Can't describe it, it just isn't right

Haven't worn cologne since I was in my 20's barhopping, looking for strange. Does anyone know if  nightclubs still have bathroom attendants that hand you a towel to dry your hands, spritz you with cologne and then expect a tip? What a crappy job that must have been, pun intended. Imagine the want ad.

Enjoy the smell of bowel movements and puke? Don't mind slipping on urine? Like to increase the chances of other men getting laid while you hide in the bathroom working for tips? Apply now

I vaguely remember being some place where there was a worker in the bathroom who was working to dry people’s hands and some other task, can’t remember. Couldn’t tell you the place or the city. Maybe it was Nash, I don’t know. But no, I did not get a spritz of cologne. Bummer

None of my colognes are meant to be clubbing or party fragrances. The closest I get is maybe Spicebomb Extreme and a little bit Prada Black. They will work in a pinch

Prior to covid, if a broad came up to me wearing the scent of bleached linen, I wouldn't be able to control myself. Since I had covid, I can't smell it anymore.

In 90's Chicago, the club bathroom attendant was at every single club in the city and the burbs. Couldn't get away from them.

I never completely lost my sense of taste or smell when I had it. It changed and it’s weird. Somethings I eventually had to relearn the taste as well. It is what it is though.
