I can tie the FG but it's kind of a pain in the ass. I'll rig my rods up at home with it, but in the kayak I'll go double uni. I recently learned about the sc knot. Seems quite a bit easier to tie but overall similar to the FG. Anyone using sc rather than FG? How about strength of the knot vs fg?

The SC isn't a connection you hear much about.  Strength wise its practically equal to the FG with med dia lines.  I think the FG is slightly thinner, but the SC is still slim enough to get through a line guide.

Watched a tutorial on the SC knot but I didnt pursue it any further.

I've been tying the FG knot for the past 5 seasons. Two or three every night for months is a investment in time I'm going to milk.

Wow!  You might be one of the most experienced  experts on tying the fg!  what tips do you have? what's the most important part? thanks

I keep tension on both lines and always straighten the leader before snuggling the braid down. 14 wraps on small (6# - 10#) lines and up to 20 wraps on the heavier leaders.

I dont think I have any secrets, just consistent.

And I pinch the knot pretty tight when I'm wrapping.

Sc looks much much easier to tie although I haven't tried it yet but it sure does look simpler.

In regards to the FG. Keeping tension on the line as you make your wraps really helped. Also alternating half hitches seemed to help me. Then the rizuto finish. I have had problems with my rizuto finish unraveling a bit so I just started using a dab of super glue on it.

Sc knot, you just double it up and wrap it around, go through the loop, tighten, then start your half hitches. Seems quite a bit easier.

So you use half hitches plus the rizzuto finish?

I been using the rizzuto finish consistently and never do half hitches and never had an issue.

It’s possible that your rizzuto finish in not cinching down correctly because of the half hitches?

If you are using superglue, the rizuto is just for show. Much faster to just tie 4 alternating half-hitch knots, glue, and skip the rizuto. However, it is entirely possible you can tie a ruzito faster than I can alternate 4 half-hitches... I'm pretty meticulous (my wife calls me slow but meticulous sounds better).

I'm going to give the sc a go.

Fg seems like high chance for failure if not tied perfectly. All it is really is wrapping the line around it and securing it with half hitches. If not done tight, easy for it to pull out. Where as many other knots just get tighter when you pull.

Sc seems easier, and better as after the wraps you slip through, so it really can't pull out. Then you can start your half hitche highway.

I use image shrink lite to resize pictures to post here, it's free and works. I started using the dumbed down freshwater version of the GT knot as a test a few years ago. The plan was use it until it gave me a reason to go back to the FG. Its not the smallest, but not too big either. I can pass 50lb 832 to 25lb FC sniper through size 5 guides without issue. It handles the shock of big hooksets well and the braid doesn't cut the FC. Has never failed on a fish, and when I have to break off it fails at the terminal knot as often as the leader. I guess you can say I'm still testing, but I haven't tied a FG knot in a few years.

after posting this, i played around with the SC knot some more. its basically the FG knot, the beginning is just different. It is a bit thicker, after playing around I will stick with the FG knot. The only benefit I see of the SC over FG is not having to keep tension on the line while making your initial 20 wraps. overall Id say they are just as much work, although I think SC might be easier to do while sitting in my cramped kayak due to not having to keep that tension like the FG.

You want easy in a boat, try the Lefty Kreh leader knot. I have used this knot for three years and I’ve only had one failure and that was on me (don’t tie knots when exhausted). Every snag I’ve had to break off has broken at the bait or hook, never the leader.

I use it on all my spinning rigs (20 lb. braid to 6 lb. mono or YZH leader) and my frog rig (50 lb. braid to 12 lb. mono leader). I have no issues with casting (I do not have micro guides. YMMV).

I takes 30-45 seconds to tie.

I’ve become a fan of the fg knot.  I use the tricks recommended earlier.  I have also adopted a few new? tricks.  One is that I tie a double surgeons loop at the braid tag end.  This improves my purchase when snugging up the knot as old age has weakened my grip.

Second, I bought a line tightening tool, but I find it a bit clumsy esp. with lighter braid.  As I am known to enjoy wine/sparkling wine frequently, I save the wine bottle corks to use for tightening the line.  The mushroom shaped champagne cork works nicely with the double surgeon loop tag end.  On the other end, I do around 7 non overlapping wraps of braid around the cork and then pull both corks tightly.   The braid bites into the cork a bit, but the braid wraps snug up nicely and darken a few shades around the leader.

Thus far, this works nicely with no knot failures to date on a good range of braided line (#2 to #12) with #20-#120+ mono leaders.
