Mbirdsley Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 I was using a 7ft m/l fast colt dobyns for my wacky rig rod/finnesse rod. That was untill my gas tank in the boat snapped it last fall. I really liked the rod it had a lot of back bone for a medium light. so far after looking at mud hole, Janns, lure parts online. I’ve not found really anything that stands out to me. I need suggestions at some blanks to look at. Price really isn’t an issue. im thinking of using the either the lzr or szr guides from mud hole. Quote
KCFinesse Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 I really like my Bushido SJ72/6-12 for most light shakeyhead and wacky rig stuff. It transitions well to it's backbone. 2 Quote

Super User MickD Posted January 8, 2023 Super User Posted January 8, 2023 Bushidos are nice blanks for the money, about at the sweet spot between price and function. As are the Rainshadow Revelations, in my opinion. Are you looking to build cast or spin? If a blank is described as having a lot of backbone for a medium light it suggests a fast or Xfast action? What length do you think you prefer? Sticking with 7 feet? Quote
spoonplugger1 Posted January 9, 2023 Posted January 9, 2023 I'm with Mick, making length over performance or function your first priority is a big mistake. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 9, 2023 Posted January 9, 2023 Let’s disregard the subjective term ML for a minute. What baits are you rigging? What other techniques and bait weights will you use it for? Quote

I’m looking for a fast or extra fast tip. I like to be able to wackem and bury a tiny wacky rig hook. Lure parts does have rx-6 fast medium kit 8-14 lbs except it comes with with a EVa handle. I would like to have a cork handle. I should look and just see if they have the blank. Mud hole has a crb colored series 7ft m/l 1/4- 1/2 fast action rod but, again it’s only available with a EVa handle only reason I was looking at the kits is it’s one stop shopping. I need to get it through my head that this is a process of getting the right components. not just throw something together. I kinda thought a 7ft m/L spinning rod would be kinda of generic but, seems like they are not as prevalent. Quote

I really liked it for wacky rigs as I could really wackem and bury a tiny wacky rig hook. I have thrown more with it but, those 4 things were the main techniques after I bought my 7ft m/l st.croix premier. The premier is a fast action rod but, I would say it’s more of a light m/l moderate action rod. The premier is what I use for really finnesse stuff like paddle tails, Ned rigs, flukes, 1/8 mojo rigs, wieght less worms etc etc. I do not like to throw jerk baits, shad raps or wacky rigs with the premier. so I’m a nut shell I’m looking to use 10 lbs flouro or 20 lbs braid. Maybe I should start looking for a jerk bait/ shad rap rod and wacky rigs be secondary. I want it to be faster and heavier action than my premier but, not to heavy. I lighter medium action rod would work. I know they’re not really a do all rod. Quote
MikeK Posted January 9, 2023 Posted January 9, 2023 Pass on the CRB 701ML, it's a moderate fast action. 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 9, 2023 Posted January 9, 2023 Try the Rodgeeks C473 MHXS even though it’s labeled MH it’s 1/4-3/4 with a soft but fast tip. It’s a unique action that’s great for those applications 1 Quote
BayouSlide Posted January 9, 2023 Posted January 9, 2023 I use a Falcon Lowrider Weight Worm (LFC-67MH) coupled with a Shimano Curado 70 MGL and am extremely happy with it ?? Quote

A comparatively soft tip that leads quickly into the backbone. I’ve seen this in Steez rods I’ve worked on and to a lesser degree some castaways. They’re crisp to as you’d expect from the SCIV material 13 minutes ago, Mbirdsley said: I’ll take a look at it The new website describes it as Mefium heavy extra slow but should read extra sensitive. At least it always did in the past. 1 Quote

Mbirdsley Posted January 11, 2023 Author Posted January 11, 2023 Is rod geeks usually fairly fast on shipping ? I’ve been herd that they can take a while to finally ship the blank. Could have been Christmas rush too, that caused the shipping issues. Quote
spoonplugger1 Posted January 12, 2023 Posted January 12, 2023 My AllStar BAST 813-T Tops and Tails built rods fit the light tip, good backbone category. Use them for Wacky Worm, Senkos, etc. 1/8 to 1 oz. rated, but I would never throw 1 0z. with it. The blanks are out there, you just can't choose only 7 ft. blanks as your only choice. Quote

Any delays I’ve noticed are easily attributed to current supply chain circumstances. Nothing like the NFC crapshoot Quote

MikeK Posted January 12, 2023 Posted January 12, 2023 Northfork Composites. Make blanks, also Edge rods. 1 Quote
BassinCNY Posted January 12, 2023 Posted January 12, 2023 I have a rod made from a Bushido SJ68/6-10. I ordered it as a ned rod but it's versatile. I'm very happy with it. Quote
spoonplugger1 Posted January 15, 2023 Posted January 15, 2023 A lot of people like the RodGeeks 68MXF, from Rainshadow the IMMS68MXF-TB. A buddy says the MHX SJ843 works. Some have gone Bubba with dropshot, wacky, pretty much all the prior finesse presentations and using MHXF rods, you have to pick your poison by how you fish. Quote
Mbirdsley Posted January 15, 2023 Author Posted January 15, 2023 I think I’m going to order the C473 MHXS that Delaware valley tackle suggested. It seems close the lure weight of dobyns. I’m going to get the teal/light blue version and wrap it with grey thread. I’m going to get the cbr LZR guides through mud hole. Haven’t decided on what cork, maybe a cork handle kit, or if I want full cork or split grip. Don’t know what seat yet. I’ll let the blank speak to me when it gets here. At the very least i believe, it will be a good wacky rig rod. If it’s not good at jerk baits and shad raps I’ll build a different one. Won’t know until it gets built Quote
Mbirdsley Posted January 27, 2023 Author Posted January 27, 2023 I ended up ordering a second rod through rod geek. It’s a 7ft 9 heavy fiberglass rod for deep heavy cranks 3/4-2oz. This one in dark metallic blue. I’ve never had a fiberglass crank rod so this will be totally new. it says right in the web sight that it takes 4-6 weeks to ship. I don’t know if st.croix is making them after I placed the order or what. Not a big deal we’re in the depths of winter right now. So waiting isn’t a big deal. Quote
youeverjust Posted April 5, 2023 Posted April 5, 2023 Have you been able to spin those rods up and test them out yet? Interested to hear your thoughts on them! Quote
