Conclusion Posted January 6, 2023 Posted January 6, 2023 So I purchased my first boat and dropped it off at a local marina to have it winterized and a fish finder installed. I explicitly stated I wanted the transducer installed on a transducer plate, not put directly on to the hull. Turns out they did what I told them not to, some excuse of poor communication between them. They're knocking half the price off the charges because of it. I didn't want it installed right on the transom because I don't want a bunch of holes. They're going to remove it and install the plate for free and install the plate over the holes they put in for the transducer. As this is my first boat, am I just being OCD in worrying about it or should I be as ticked and concerned as I am? Appreciate any advice, thanks. Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted January 6, 2023 Super User Posted January 6, 2023 Aluminum or Fiberglass hull? Long as they epoxy the plate on correctly, you shouldn't have any issues either way...but there are ways of sealing the holes before mounting the plate. Fiberglass - epoxy in the hole Aluminum - brazing the hole closed 2 Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted January 6, 2023 Super User Posted January 6, 2023 It doesn’t matter what they do to your boat to fix it. That never should have happened. I’d be wanting everything free. Quote
Conclusion Posted January 6, 2023 Author Posted January 6, 2023 It's aluminum. I agree in principle it's ridiculous and I'm keen to argue further but I don't know if more seasoned boat owners would consider this a non issue and just deal as I understand it's not uncommon to change transducers many times over a boats life without using mounting plates. I don't want to come across as a Karen at the marina basically. Quote
Super User gim Posted January 7, 2023 Super User Posted January 7, 2023 I wouldn’t call you OCD on something like that. You prefer it be done a certain way, they didn’t do it, now they need to correct it. They will. I’m with you on the holes. The less holes, the better. Lol Often times when you replace a transducer, the same holes are used to the mount the bracket. I am on my second ducer on my 2015 Ranger. They used the exact same mounting location and holes when I upgraded 3 years ago. Quote
Conclusion Posted January 7, 2023 Author Posted January 7, 2023 Good to know on the install of a new transducer. I've just heard with newer models they're getting bigger and assumed it meant larger brackets. Stupid question for anyone who might know, can they use the two holes they've already drilled as the holes for the plate? I know they wouldn't be as far apart but wondering if it's feasible. Quote

If they fill the holes with a good epoxy like Marine-Tex and a blind rivet there should be no issue. The aluminum transom on my boat is probably half Marine-Tex because of the different mounts used over the years and I have no leaks or issues. Quote

So after they fill the holes, they would be covered up with the plate anyways. Quote

I had to mount my transducer when I first got the boat about 20 years ago. Drilling the first holes was nerve-wracking. I have changed sonar units at least four times since then and the holes never line up. I got used to drilling and plugging. Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 8, 2023 Super User Posted January 8, 2023 What model sonar unit and what transducer do you have? Tom Quote

Yes this is exactly how they said they'd fix it. 6 hours ago, WRB said: What model sonar unit and what transducer do you have? Tom I have the helix 7 si g2n, I believe the transducer model is XNT 9 SI 180 T. 1 Quote
