ptomacbass Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 We need to replace the impeller and thermostats on the Johnson and the estimate from the shop is something like 400 dollars for both. I have watched some videos and read some stuff and both seem pretty easy to do. I was able to get off a trolling motor with seized bolts, fully install a new side imaging unit from start to finish, and take the prop off the outboard. Has anyone ever replaced an impeller and thermostats? Think a guy like me could do it considering what I have been able to do in the past? Quote
CFFF 1.5 Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 I replaced the impeller on my 2004 30hp 4-Stroke Tohatsu. It was actually much easier than I expected. Me and a buddy did it in less than an hour and it was the first time either of us had ever done an impeller. Everything went perfectly. The only hard part was disconnecting the shift cable from the lower unit. I watched the mechanic replace the thermostat on my motor and it looked just as easy as replacing the thermostat on a vehicle. Quote

Compression check, 6 new plugs, topped off oil tank with XD50, added two new bolts to TM mount, all fittings lubed as needed, new impeller, lower unit oil changed. Total cost including parts was $339. $400 for an impeller and thermostat sounds just a bit expensive... Quote

GLADES Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 The Johnson Evinrude shift levers can be a real pain. I have a Mercury 150 and I can change the impeller in less than 1 hour. Sometimes the housing must be changed and all the gaskets replaced. The thermostats are very easy to change..2 or 3 bolts and a gasket...in just a few minutes. Four hundred dollars(4-5 hours labor?) is too much unless he has to remove and clean the carbs as well. That might be a good deal. Check another shop or two for prices. Quote

A new impreller will cost you about $35, complete kit about $55. I would pull it apart before getting parts. If the housing and o-rings/seals look good, just replace the impeller. Not sure why you are replacing the thermostats, but some models are fairly expensive, but most very easy to replace. Just be sure to get the gaskets/seals also. Pull them out and check them. Place them in pot of water with a candy thermometer and start heating on the stove. At about 105 degrees they should start opening, at about 135 they should be fully open. It they are opening, they are doing all they can do. Select year model Select horse power Select your model number If you know which direction to turn a wrench, it's no problem to do what you're wanting to. For about $35 you can order a factory service manual from the dealer and it will tell you exactly what you need to do. Strongly recommend getting one if you're going to try any work yourself. At $95 per hour, you only have to save 20 minutes to recoup your cost. Quote
