Well, that was the era when you played the game, hurt or not. I'm pretty sure that Bart Starr broke his nose once playing the Vikings or possibly the Bears. He sat out a series to stop the bleeding and then returned to the game. Broken finger, no problem. Just "buddy tape" it to the next finger and go back in. Not saying it's right, not saying that it's wrong. Just how it was back then.

Lot better medical care available now.

It sure is, probably what is saving this young man's life to this point. I also think about the concussion protocol's that are in place now.

Prayers for Damar for sure and his family. And last night, all the feelings I felt in high school came back. My teammate/classmate died on our home field during a football game. He collapsed just like that. He died of a brain aneurism, completely different, I know. But the whole scene got the best of me. I started to cry and worry like I did 30 years ago. It never goes away for those players. My heart goes out to both teams.

Saw my dad today and he spoke of Chuck Hughes who died in a Bears Lions game in the 70's and the game went on.

Hamlin has been confirmed awake and communicating today. His health has improved.

The NFL announced that the Bills-Bengals game will not be finished. It will go down as no contest. One idea being floated around is to use winning percentage instead for seeds. This contingency plan was in place the past 2 years during the pandemic but never had to be used since every game was eventually played.

That puts the Chiefs in the driver seat for the top seed in the AFC, even though they lost to both the Bills and Bengals this season.

The hit he took didn't look that severe. There have been worse and the players got up and went back to the game. Maybe he has an underlying condition. Assuming he gets back to 100%, I wonder if he'd play again or even want to.

See Darren’s post from earlier- that’s the most likely scenario if there’s no underlying problems with his heart. It’s a one in a millions thing but you see it every once in a great great while with kid baseball pitchers that take a comeback liner in the chest.

I seriously doubt he had any kind of underlying condition.  If he did it was something rare that doesn't get tested for.  My oldest Grandson is playing college baseball.  He had to undergo a through physical and EKG before admission.   I would think professional athletes would have all kinds of checks.

I wasn't watching the game.  I rarely watch any pro sports.

I can't believe they cancelled the game.   If I had a heart attack while working on a vehicle one of my co workers would have to complete the job I was working on.  More than likely the same day.

Wonderful intro honor, National Anthem and kick-off touchdown for the Bills against Patriots today.  Apparently first words he communicated when he woke up were "Did we win?"

I'm fairly new to following football with any regularity.  As a newcomer, you think, 'These guys are really trying to kill each other!"  Obviously not so.  Although, I thought I noticed a slight backing off in the brutality yesterday.  It's gotta be hard keeping it all balanced.

The same thing that happened to Hamlin happened to NHLer Chris Pronger in the late 90's. He was a big defenseman who stepped out to block a shot. The shot hit him in the heart and the impact stopped his heart momentarily.

I've had a ton of injuries from hockey (broken bones, collapsed lungs, several concussions that now affect my memory, etc.), but I thank God or whomever that I've never had anything like that happen.

I got hurt playing ice hockey so many times when I was younger I can't even count them.  The worst one was a broken collar bone.  Not a whole lot they can do about that.  Just put your arm in a sling and off you go until a calcium deposit forms over the break.

I was actually a little surprised that the NFL didn't decide to finish the game too.  Perhaps not on the same night after the incident, but maybe the next night or on Wednesday night.

I was surprised at first too.  But the NFL realized that they couldn't make players play good football.  That's a good thing to realize.  The players themselves decided that one.  There was so much commentary during the week, but at one point, I heard that the outcome of that game wouldn't affect teams eligible for the play-off.  (Just the seeding, I guess, which the Bengals are pretty PO'd about at the moment).

I wasn't "sporty" as a kid, but later in life I took up horse-back riding and jumping.  For the first three years or so I was "invincible."  Then I fell off over a jump in a silly pleasure ride, and broke two ribs in three places.  In following that sport in the media, you realize it can do serious damage, even when you think you know what you're doing.  Way fun, though.
