rooster123 Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 If you had to choose between side imaging or down imaging which one would it be? Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted January 17, 2011 Super User Posted January 17, 2011 Side Imaging and I did chose it twice. Also all Side Imaging units have Down Imaging too. Its the same with Lowrance HDS units with Structure Scan and Down Scan. Seeing away from under the boat is a great benefit especially since that distance can be in the hundreds of feet. Quote
Carrington Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 i would choose side imaging also since side imaging comes with down imaging. Quote
rooster123 Posted January 17, 2011 Author Posted January 17, 2011 hummingbird makes two models 788di and 788si. S standing for side imaging and d standing for down imaging. Just curious if you had to choose and could not get them both in the same unit which would you choose and why. Quote
Carrington Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 side imaging... and every single unit will include down imaging plus conventional 2d imaging along with gps functions. the best is side imaging. If you have the money then get the side imaging. Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 17, 2011 Super User Posted January 17, 2011 X2 what Wayne said. Check out the Hummingbirds, too. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted January 17, 2011 Super User Posted January 17, 2011 rooster123, that is incorrect. There are two 788 models and neither are Side Imaging. One has DI and 2D, the other is just regular dual frequency2D sonar. The ci after 788 means Color and Internal GPS antenna. The only 700 series Side Imaging unit is the 798. Quote
Super User Catt Posted January 17, 2011 Super User Posted January 17, 2011 I would be hard pressed to pick one feature over the other, both are a huge advantage over plan sonar so I could take either one. The 570 DI features Down Imaging and Single Beam sonar for $299.99 Quote

The 570 DI features Down Imaging and Single Beam sonar for $299.99 ;) And I bought a regular 570 at the beginning of last season - drats. Technology is always moving on.... : Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted January 17, 2011 Super User Posted January 17, 2011 Catt, the 570 DI as well as the other DI models have two 2D frequencies and two DI frequencies. 455 khz is used for both. The 2D 455 khz is a very small cone angle. Check the Humminbird web site for somewhat accurate specs for the new units. They are still attempting to correct the errors put out by the marketing dept. last year. What you see in catalogs and non-Humminbird advertizing is mostly incorrect including the new 2011 Humminbird catalog. Quote
Super User Catt Posted January 17, 2011 Super User Posted January 17, 2011 Although I've done quite a bit of research and viewed a lot of real time data I'm still very much an amateur. I just wanted to throw the price range out there so everyone would know the availability is there for almost any level angler. Y'all continue to write & I'll continue to read with a comment here & there Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted January 17, 2011 Super User Posted January 17, 2011 I want both. I use side when I am looking at a bank and marking stuff. I use down when I am fishing. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted January 17, 2011 Super User Posted January 17, 2011 I use Side Imaging as I am fishing unless I am deep jigging or drop shotting. When I am casting away from the boat, seeing under it is useless. The depth is shown on the Side Imaging screen anyway. SI shows me where the fish are in direction and distance. Quote
rooster123 Posted January 17, 2011 Author Posted January 17, 2011 wayne P that is correct. Just got the new BPS marine catolog and it shows two different models-788ci HD SI combo for $699.99 which is side imaging and model- 788ci HD DI combo for $799.99. Thats what brought me too this question if you had to choose which one would it be. Also you can google them too. Quote
rooster123 Posted January 17, 2011 Author Posted January 17, 2011 whoops sorry wayne p. just saw another forum talking about how the BPS catolog had a misprint. They are talking about the 798ci hd si combo. Page 14 of the marine catolog. Thought something was weird. just show you can't trust everything you read. Quote
mferris Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 i saw that too, didn't make sense to me either...anyway,i'll probably be buying a di unit from lowrance or humminbird because from what i can tell you can't a side scan for under $1000..right? Quote
Super User Catt Posted January 19, 2011 Super User Posted January 19, 2011 Down imaging is no different than what I do now or what I did in the past with a Super 60, just a whole lot clearer mentally. Side imaging allows me to quickly find out if the bass are near the surface, suspended at mid depth or on the bottom with out having to pass directly over the structure. A detailed topographical map in conjunction with side imaging & down imaging finally connected all the dots. Which one could I do without? Humdown imaging, I already know where the structure is and what's on it. I just glad we have them both Quote
