Super User Munkin Posted January 2, 2023 Super User Posted January 2, 2023 So I have fished with spinning reels for 36 years and today was a first. Somehow I was able to backlash a spinning reel? I didn't think it was possible until it happened. Allen 9 Quote

Backlashes or spinning reels? lol Yeah I've gotten my share of wind knot/spinning reel backlashes. That's the hate part of my love/hate relationship with braid. Yes I do close the bail with my hand. 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted January 2, 2023 Super User Posted January 2, 2023 Welcome brother! Did the line get under the spool and wrap around the shaft? Quote
Super User Munkin Posted January 2, 2023 Author Super User Posted January 2, 2023 Trying to cast to a laydown with low hanging branches. Tall grass fishing from the bank so I had a small window to cast through. Lure made it through the window but the line between the spool and first guide hit the grass. Line started just flying off the spool. Planned to replace the line anyway so no big deal. Allen 1 Quote

Woody B Posted January 2, 2023 Posted January 2, 2023 I take Mrs B's cousins husband fishing a couple times a year. He's always taking junk about my baitcasters. I won't say I never backlash, but I rarely backlash. OTOH he's constantly getting wind knots. Finally, the last time he was fishing with me I told him how to stop the wind knots. Stuff like the OP's line hitting the grass would wreak havoc on any equipment. Don't be hard on yourself. I caught my trolling motor twice yesterday. 1 Quote
Super User DitchPanda Posted January 3, 2023 Super User Posted January 3, 2023 I'm just impressed with your choice of reel...thought I was the only one using those old beat up Garcia cardinals. Quote

Super User king fisher Posted January 3, 2023 Super User Posted January 3, 2023 I feel I have accomplished an amazing feat any time I make a cast with any type of reel and don't get a backlash. 3 Quote

Yes, $30 Wal-Mart reel on a Megabass rod is how I roll. Allen Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 6, 2023 Super User Posted January 6, 2023 Fixed spool can’t over run the line and backlash. What you have is a loop you created with closing the bail on loose line or back reeled. Tom Quote

Susky River Rat Posted January 6, 2023 Posted January 6, 2023 You can do anything you put your mind to! personally, if it can happen it will probably happen to me! Quote
Zcoker Posted January 6, 2023 Posted January 6, 2023 Yep. It's more a wind knot that wasn't seen on a previous cast and then frazzled up good on the last cast. Hats off for not doing it for 36 years! Quote
