Looking for a shorter MH

Kayak guy here. Looking for a versatile MH rod, preferably around 6'8.

 

I've narrowed it down to MB P5 Super Destroyer and Poison Adrena 6'11 M+ and Steez AGS Target Sniper. I fear the SD will be too heavy and the poison adrena too long. I've never used a Daiwa rod.

 

I'd like to throw lighter texas rigs, 1/2 ounce to 5/8 total weight. Smaller, finess jigs, the odd chatterbait, the odd open water frog etc. Sweet spot around 1/2oz to 5/8oz, capable of throwing 3/4 at times.

 

I feel like neither rod is ideal so I'm open to other suggestions.

 

Edit: Any thoughts on the p5 Blade?

I can't help you with specific rod recommendations but G Loomis still makes a ton of 6'6"-6'8" mh jig and worm rods. That's probably where I would look.

St Croix has a couple 6'8" MH rods - Legend X and Legend Elite (also the Mojo Bass, but that's well below what looks like your budget).

In the Destroyer price range the GLX should treat you really well.

I'm a big fan of that PA 611M+ but I can't tell you if it's too long.  If the length does work for you, I can tell you that it'll do all those things pretty well, some even great.  Shouldn't the  Blade also be on your list?  The P5's seem designed for what you're looking for, just not sure which one.

Got two special edition models 6'6 MHF MBR, they are my general-purpose rods.   They are brilliant at bottom contact T Rigs and similar applications but are great in various other roles as well.   Not a great single hook moving bait rod though outside of Buzzbaits for whatever reason.    

 

I have an OG Steez AGS 6'3 MHF from pre 2010......every time it's in my hand since starting back fishing and seeing the shocking absent of even 6'6 stuff, I'd amazed at the disappearance of rods this length.

 

So many unique applications it does better than any rod made today by light years, sad to see the industry move away from these rod lengths.

Not as bougie as your above mentions but I picked up a majorcraft benkei 6'9" mh/f last summer and it quickly became one of my funnest to use rods, t-rigs and jigs no prob, I throw spooks on it too, can't beat the price.

Me too. I have a MB Destroyer In a 6'3 length. It's great for treble hook moving baits, jerkbaits etc. Not enough leverage for single hook applications, miss alot of Hookset on that rod. Fun rod though. But I do agree with your sentiment,  hard to find shorter rods these days.

Yeah I've recently discovered this is the greatest 110jr rod I'll ever find, imagine the P5 you have would be similar.    I jerk straight down and if not on the most perfect elevated platform, the shorter the rod the better.

 

I just love the beefy little backbone in this rod with the very top being a bit more soft than your typical fast action.     To me it's a great shakeyhead and finesse t rig rod as well.    

 

I think we all have some flaws in our technique, and certain baits brings those out more than others thus needing technique specific rods.....for me that was the Chatterbait.   Once I got a tier 1 specific chatterbait rod, the success percentages skyrocketed.   For cranks though I can slow down a bit and let them play out a bit more on a heavier blank.   

 

Rods are so end user taste specific.   That's why when we find a truly great rod, we want to be buried with them ?

No, just started poking around their line up because of yourself, WRB, and a couple threads on tackletour.  But the 6'7MH lists as a one piece, no?

 

Also, the MS-1 M/F on TW is on sale.

Have the p5 Super Destroyer and recommend it. It will work perfect for what you want to do with it - texas rigs, jigs, occasional frog - this rod is in my opinion the ultimate kayak rod. It is powerful - but not too heavy. Balance is spot on with a Steez Sv Tw.

 

It fishes more moderate than the other two, in a JDM Bass rod style - set the hook faster than you normally would with an extra fast rod.

 

This rod will excel in any single hook application for its rating. Plenty sensitive and ultra versatile.

I have the P5 Super Destroyer as well and it should work fine for most of what you are looking to throw.  I think a 3/8oz lure might be a struggle though. 

 

Another one to look at is Megabass Valkyrie 6'9'' M+. It might be a little heavier and softer than the P5 but if it's like the 7'1'' Heavy I have,  it should be extremely versatile.

I was on a jdm site last night that were all 2-piecers, can't find them now lol, just assumed they all were, but your link does show it as 1 pc. I do find that the one I have at least, a benkei, is a great value and punches above it's weight for blank and build quality, all fuji components at $130 is hard to beat.

The Benkei looks great.  Have you ever thrown jerks on the 6'9 MH/RF?  Looks like it could be a bit much for vision 110's but probably just fine with some stouter hooked jerkbaits.  Kinda looking for a "cheaper, but nice" rod to shore fish Lake MI for smallies, 1/4-1/2oz finesse round/football jigs, 2.5" tubes, 3/4oz dark sleeper, 1/4-1/2oz underspins, and ideally a vision 110+1 jr.  The MS-1 7' M/F is intriguing at the same price, but I know nearly nothing.

I'm not huge on jerks but I have tossed some pointer 100's on it, I bought it originally as a dedicated topwater rod so I imagine it'd work fine as it's great for spooks. MC lists the benkei as "regular fast" which I interpreted as mod-fast but imo it is closer to fast, for comparison it has a similar tip but a touch more give center blank than say my mh/f st croix le.

I've been eyeing this exact rod for 6 months. I saw that it had 7 guides - is this any kind of issue at all. That's the only concern I've had about it.

falcon head turner would be a good option. 6’10”.  The handle isn’t as long as some. I use mine for lots of things and all from a kayak. Single hook blade baits primarily, lighter cover jigs or worm pitching, or just a general rod to throw something on. Light cover frogs and bigger other topwaters are good. It’s rated 1/4-3/4 and throws a 1/2 oz chatterbait with a zako (total weight about 7/8) just fine. A 3/8 jig and trailer is my normal light jig on it. I have the expert version but I bet the cara is also excellent.

It hasn’t been an issue or a concern for me. Is it ideal? Probably not, but for $130 I got no complaints.
