Super User Darth-Baiter Posted December 29, 2022 Super User Posted December 29, 2022 i sprayed it with fresh water from my waterbladder. at home, i turned the garden hose on it. i took it off the rod, and set it down to clean/lube..but i fell asleep. i plan to NOT do open heart surgery and simply wipe it down and lube and go. i need to remove all the line, because it's pretty twisted from all day jerkbaiting.. (when hooks get caught on line, it spins all the way home), and i backlashed bad. anything i need to do with more fresh water, compressed air, anything? i got winter time to send it in to a pro, no problem..if it gets bad. 1
a1712 Posted December 29, 2022 Posted December 29, 2022 Disassemble and do a thorough cleaning of it. It's a fishing reel not a Jarvik Heart. Watch a few Youtube videos and go at it. Brian. 4
newapti5 Posted December 30, 2022 Posted December 30, 2022 It depends. How long had it been fully submerged? If it's in-and-out in a flash, the reel is probably OK. If it stayed submerged longer than say 5 seconds, I would send it to professionals for a full clean-up. 1
Super User WRB Posted December 30, 2022 Super User Posted December 30, 2022 You are not far from ReelEx Dan Isaac who is regarded as the top Shimano reel tech in the country. Dan will clean super tune your reel with ABEC 7 bearings for $30. Give Dan a call. Tom 2 1
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted December 30, 2022 Posted December 30, 2022 More concerning than be dunked is the brackish water. A deep clean and lube are strongly recommended. 3 1

Super User Darth-Baiter Posted December 30, 2022 Author Super User Posted December 30, 2022 I didn’t know brackish conditions are worse. Super User Darth-Baiter Posted December 30, 2022 Author Super User Posted December 30, 2022 I called ReelEX. nice guy, that Dan. he said there is no real such thing as Brackish water. its salt water to a reel. he asked, "do you want me to clean it now for $30, or repair it later for $120?". the Ceramic Bearing upgrade is +$20. 1

Super User Darth-Baiter Posted December 30, 2022 Author Super User Posted December 30, 2022 i would be lying if i said i didnt google salt water baitcasting reels..for next time. i just need one. maybe two.

There are casting reels that have components that resist corrosion a little better. You still have to strip a Chron G or Coastal SV if they get dunked if you want it to last, just like any other BC reel. 1

The difference in viscosity (density also changes but has no direct effect) caused by the difference in salinity between brackish and salt water(roughly 17 and 33 parts per thousand for each, or half) will have negligible if even measurable effect on the penetration of water in the relatively large openings as found in a fishing reel. So while yes, given a precise enough experiment with small enough openings, fresh water will flow faster and easier than salt water, in real world applications that is actually moot, AND, even if the flow of salt to brackish water was reduced by half (which it isn't), the concentration of salt would be the same in the water in the reel.

Negligible? Yet it easily felt by divers and swimmers overall. Real life? LOL! I remember quoting the bearings, because it's a phenomenon well-known by brazilian snook anglers. Brackish water penetrates bearings easily, even more so, with alleviated spools.

OK, maybe physics is different in Brazil than the rest of the world, or too much cachaca... Not sure what divers and swimmers have to do with it. 1
MidwestBassAttack Posted December 31, 2022 Posted December 31, 2022 I suggest either performing a full teardown, clean, and relube. It’s simple to do. Or send it in and have it fully serviced…..then buy another one so your not without the reel ?

I'll live with my other reels. i have plenty. but I do agree with the "wish list".

The negligible difference is felt by them, if so, it's really negligible? I'm just trying to understand hillbilly physics. 2
