Bought Pflueger President reel in april 2021 and since we fish alot from rocky, boulder, gravel banks where she catches many and then sets the rod down on the rocks to unhook and rebait the reel gets abused on the outside.

I serviced her reel in july 2021 oiling it and greasing it and was surprised how beat up it was.

Now its Dec of 2022 and i took a close look at her reel and saw it was really chewed up as we spent all year fishing rocky lined dams.

I havnt said anything and never will because thats the environment we fish in and she brings home the fish and i am not going to put any negative thoughts into her head of her having to change her ways of fishing.

I will say the president of hers has never broke and i never replaced any parts on it. I will be ordering a new bail spring as hers is just wore the heck out.

The first 4 pics are the latest dec 2022, the last 3 are from july 2021.

This is what most guys call boat rash. If she's setting her reel down on rocks each time she unhooks a fish, it looks like she's catching them very well. Good for her. She's probably a good fisherperson. Reels come and go, but building good memories is more important.

Great attitude, and lucky man having a wife that abuses fishing tackle that hard.

That said, not my style as there is just something awesome about having a beautiful rod and reel in your hands while fishing.       My rods get more scratches than my reels as I always use covers and place the reels down where they won't get boat rash.

That's awesome! There's just something about a tool that's been used and broken in that's very appealing to me. It's like an old leather belt or leather wallet that fits just right.

I've acquired some nicer equipment this year but I always go back to one rod that has my hand print on the cork, some scuffs and dings, and a ton of catches on it.

I would show it to her, compare it to yours, and if a difference, would suggest she could be more careful.  Take a pad of some sort, or a chamois along to place the reel on.  I wonder if the rod is getting dinged, too?  That might lead to a failure under load.  There are a lot of reasons to improve the situation.  (Tactfully, of course).

The gouges on the spool lip might tend to damage the line, consider dressing them off.

We move around on big boulders and rip rap, even just a few steps are trecherous. Everytime we set a soft something down to lay reel on its now well out of reach.

I lay mine down easilly or stick handle in a crevice and if fish is an easy unhook just hold the rod under my arm or between legs all while balancing on a rock.

I wouldn't say a word and just appreciate she enjoys fishing with you enough to go out and brave the riprap. So she's tearing up a $50-$60 reel. Big deal. The enjoyment of the time together is worth that.

Cleaning up the spool lip a bit as mentioned above WOULD be a good idea to protect the line though.

Is she hard on her car too? My ol' lady is hard on cars, vacuums, basically if it can be banged around then it gets banged around. All the chair and table legs have damage from her banging the vacuum cleaner against them, same for the decorative molding around walls and doors. Her cars get dinged up fast, she runs over every pothole and dashboard, etc. look like it was a rental car. I don't get it.

Glad she doesn't fish hardly ever. My worst reel doesn't look anything remotely like that after 25 years.

But I agree - keep mouth shut. Everything but that reel lip looks like I could tolerate. I'd buy her cheaper stuff if it was me since she doesn't seem to be much on the finesse side of things.

She doesnt have a drivers license only a permit. I tried teaching her to drive but i coudnt take the stress of it any more so i stopped.

She did start out with a shakesphere rod and reel combo in 2020 which cost $15.00 at wallmart and at the start of july that year she had allready stripped the cheap gears inside. Hence the so far indestructable pfleugur president for her.

She does wear out snow shovels, i will have to take pic of them as its crazy that half the shovel scoop is wore off every year.

She works hard and fishs hard. She was born in her parents nipa hut with dirt floors and banana leaves for a roof in the jungle amonst rice fields and coconut trees. She grew up with no running water only a well and no refridgerator. Her familly got their first ever refridgerator in 2019 as i gave them ours when we moved to the usa. She is one tough woman.

@throttleplate My wife of 30 years is Cebuana. Driving? LOL!

A fishing rod is nothing more than a tool for my wife, and she’ll throw a 3” grub on a jighead ‘til her arm falls off, and outfish me regularly. A $100 butcher knife makes a good bolo, and scissors are a multi-tool. You know the deal.

Nothing frail about her and couldn’t live without her.

I took apart her president to take out the worn bail spring and find out it was actually broken into 2 pieces. Still worked but major sloppy bail arm.

I wouldn't say one word whatsoever and I wouldn't even consider trying to refurbish this reel. I would, on the next occasion like bday or something I would buy her a new rod and reel. Those pfluegers are great little reels and cheap. Worth every penny to buy her a new one every other year.
