jitterbug127 Posted December 27, 2022 Posted December 27, 2022 I just bought a jon boat, and it came with an outboard motor. I haven't started the motor yet due to the cold weather. I bought the boat being indifferent if the motor worked or not. I got a great deal on the boat/trailer, so a working outboard is a nice bonus. I am wondering if you guys had any recommendations on forums/websites that would provide diagrams/copies of owners manuals that I can reference my outboard motor. The specific motor is a 25 hp 1969 evinrude sportsman. I believe it has an electric start feature to it. My plan is to the the basic maintenance/new plugs/new gas and see if she starts with my engine muffs this week. If I've got any problems I will need to reference a manual to start working on fixing the problem. Thanks in advance Rob 1 Quote

I like it. I have been on google and found lots of resources, but being fairly new boat motors I don't really know to decipher what is good or not. I should have asked which site is the bassresource of outboards? Quote

Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted December 30, 2022 Global Moderator Posted December 30, 2022 I’d be shocked if you couldn’t get her running for a reasonable cost. Those things were made to last 1 Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted December 30, 2022 Super User Posted December 30, 2022 Thats a fairly simple, basic motor. There are numbers of factory manuals on ebay for around $20 or so 1969 Johnson Outboard Motor Service Manual 25 HP | eBay or you can find you a Clymer manual for it. Crowley Marine is usually a pretty good source for parts. 1969 Outboard 25 [25R69B] - Parts Lookup | Crowley Marine. If you are smart, you will replace the water pump and service the lower unit. The lower units after getting that old are notorious for leaking and it's a good chance it will need new seals and O-rings in it. If it's not full of lube and if the lube is not black and stinks, it probably leaks. It's black because of wear and they seldom ever get serviced. 2 1 Quote
jitterbug127 Posted December 30, 2022 Author Posted December 30, 2022 I was able to get her started last night. I serviced the lower unit and the gear lube was a nice light brown/oil color. Someone has taken care of this motor. The inside looks really clean and free from corrosion. She runs strong (in the driveway). A bit of smoke at first. I assume burning off old gas, 2 stroke oil and the fogging oil I put in it. I am going to run the motor this weekend and see how she does. I will consider replacing the water pump if needed, but everything looks really good in this motor especially for the year. I will say the motor likes to run more than idle. It a "screamer" as I've read online. New to boat terminology. 1 Quote
