The one that got away….every year

Believe it or not I’ll lose fish every now and then. Not often but it happens.

 

What gets me is I lose a stud in the same spot  the week between Christmas and New Years every single year. Like I’m talking off the exact same lay down at the exact same 30 degree angle cast from the shore on the exact same jig every single year.
 

Now this has been going on for 6-7 years so it’s not the same fish, rather a textbook spot that I think pulls in the dominant fish around prespawn.

 

Sometimes I get a jump and see it’s around 5 pounds, last night I never saw the fish. It stayed low and took locked down drag twice, felt very good. Most heartbreaking was about 3 years ago and losing one in the 9-10 range when it jumped 3’ from shore (I’ve caught a 9 and a 10 on the other side of the cut 100’ away, was likely one of these 2 fish I’d previously caught).

 

Anyone else have a spot that seems to beat them every year?

sounds like a fish story! Kidding so not bass fishing but, I had a body of water near me that no matter what I did I always lost a musky there. Never did get one in the net.

I’ve got a laydown on “ol muddy pond” that I’ve referenced before where there seems to be a fish that is the only fish in that pond that likes a spinnerbait. I wanna say she’s shaken me off three times now. It’s a shame because she seems to be a biggun. I don’t lose many fish on a spinnerbait either. She’s just a beast I guess
 

A lake where a partner and I had trouble landing quality fish is Badin Lake on the Yadkin river chain. Those fish are mean in the summertime and we had some heartbreak. I actually talked to that partner yesterday though and he updated me, telling me that he believes he caught a fish that I watched him lose off a boat ramp. He said she went over 6lbs

I had it happen on two crossed laydowns on a lake a few years in a row. Two small trunks ran nearly parallel a maybe a foot apart before either a limb or the trunks crossed about 20' from the bank. Two or 3 times when I'd flip in between them I'd get bit right where they crossed. It was some time ago, but I believe I broke off once, got hung up the 2nd time, and the 3rd time I got the fish out into open water before it pulled off. I went back to that lake for the first time in about 4 years this past fall, and was hoping to catch on there, but no avail. The fish were nowhere between the size of yours, but they were good fish for up in this region!

There's a point on the power plant lake I fish that for some reason, I can't keep fish hooked there. Last time I was there a couple weeks ago was no exception. I hooked a half dozen fish on a Ned rig, and they'd just pop off for some reason. I lost a monster on a lipless there a few years ago, only bite I had all day that day.
