MontgomeryCountyFishing Posted December 27, 2022 Posted December 27, 2022 Hello all, I recently grabbed some 6-inch Megabass Mag Draft swimbaits. I was wondering if anyone has recommendations for rods and reels for throwing a swimbait that size? I'm more interested in reel choice. I imagine a slower gear ratio and a reel with a deep enough spool for like 15Lb fluorocarbon. Any recommendations will help! thank you! Quote
GrumpyOlPhartte Posted December 27, 2022 Posted December 27, 2022 Hope this helps. I have used two brands of rods for MagDrafts and enjoyed both. For years I used an Okuma TCS 7’ 3” Heavy rod that could handle lures from 1/4- to 2-oz. Used to be called the Frog and Swimbait rod. Loved that rod for Mag Drafts, S-Waver 168s, SPRO rats, and Little Creepers. Might want to contact @Catt … believe he has knowledge of the newest model of that rod. Upon the untimely demise of that rod, @WRB recommended that I consider the iRod Genesis IRG754F-H (Magic Stick). It’s a 7’5” rod rated for 1/2 - 2-oz. lures. Used it this past summer and it’s a great rod as well. Between the two I would be hard pressed to choose a favorite. From my personal experience I would say the Okuma plays more nicely if you also want to use the rod for frogs and the iRod has a bit more beef when getting up close to the two-ounce mark. In my opinion, Unless you use a heavy weighted hook with an under spin, both work great with the medium size swimbaits. (I hope all my “technical jargon” doesn’t confound you here. ?) As for reels, I’ll a Lew’s fan so probably no help there. Oh, both rods mentioned are very reasonable in price! 2 Quote

I might be in the minority, but rodwise, the regular magdraft got good hookups on any MH/H I threw it on. If magdraft freestyle, I definitely think a powerful, longer jig rod is best, especially if long casts are the way to get bites or there is a lot of cover. I use a 7:1 reel because I've settled on that as my standard, but the magdraft definitely is a challenge to reel slow enough, so a lower ipt could be perfect for you. Although, I'd be leery of any ipt less than 24-25ish. I need to be able to catch up to the ones that hit it on the way toward me. scott 2 Quote

Super User FishTank Posted December 27, 2022 Super User Posted December 27, 2022 I have been using two different setups for the MagDraft..... Megabass P5 Super Destroyer and a 2012 Antares 5.x:1 with 15lb Tatsu. Megabass Valkyrie 7'1'' Heavy and a 2012 Antares 7.x: with 14lb Sunline Shooter. I just reel slowly Both of these set ups have been great and will cast 6in MagDraft a mile. Between the two I like the Valkyrie the best for this bait. Quote

Str8BraidPowa Posted December 27, 2022 Posted December 27, 2022 (edited) My Expride 7'3" EH gets this work in my line up. It goes up to 2 Oz. The tip is surprisingly soft for a XH rod, does great for frogs, manages some grass flipping duty and medium swim baits for me. Good luck no matter the rod choice. I use a Curado 200, I run 65 lb braid for my frog, if the water is clear-ish I will add a 20-30 lb leader on for the swim bait if necessary. Is it worth it? I really like it so far. I have thrown baits on it from around 1/2oz up to 2oz. I have used it for everything from jigs to crankbaits and I have been pleased with how it performs all around. It wouldn't be my first go to for jigs though. My favorites baits for it are topwater and the Alabama rig. Just a few notes on this rod.... It has an extendable handle and it has spiral wrapped guides. Also, the overall action of this rod is somewhere between a glass rod and a graphite rod so it's both soft and sensitive. 1 Quote
