Need a Kayak Cover for Old Town 106 pdl

Been storing my Old Town outside, looking for a proper cover for it.

 

Would love to hear about experience with different models.

 

Simplicity is good. Want to cover it and forget it.

Question for y'all, if you're car topping or keeping your kayak on a trailer for long periods of time do you put a cover on it to protect it from the sun? Like if you keep it out for a week or a couple

I have used carver covers for my last two kayaks and would highly recommend them. They are durable land keep the sun and weather out of them.  I would reommend the sun-dura as the material is heavier and i know all their covers come with straps, at least the two i have bought have, that allow you to tighten it down and even travel with it covered shoudl you so choose to do so.

I always cover my kayak after each trip unless it is raining when I get back, then I let it dry out first.

Im on my 3rd bass boat and not one has ever been under a roof. Maybe this one will get lucky some day.

With that said, if you get a good 600 denier cover from anyone that will pretty much do it. Yeah it will fade and not be beautiful after a few years of harsh weather. The biggest key I have found with covers is to not touch them at all should they freeze. Make no attempt to do ANYTHING to it at that point.

I bought a lot of them off ebay and now amazon. This one has the factory cover and man is it nice but on a canoe or kayak I cant see that making a hill of beans.

I put a tarp over my kayaks....once or twice even many years ago.  All 4 are now stored outside uncovered.  My ONLY concern is when I go to flip one right side up to use or move....is whether there will be a copperhead under there.

Thank you! I went with a Wilderness Systems Kayak Cover in S size. I made the choice based on a couple of responses on a FB forum and a couple of Amazon reviews that said it fit the 106 well. I made a quick order - then got some recommendations for covercraft.

I've left my PDL 106 and Bonafide RS117 sitting uncovered in my yard for about 2 years.

 

I would normally consider covering them to be good practice. 

 

I got a Bonafide cover for the RS117.

 

I expect the prolonged exposure isn't good for the plastic material. I assume they are deteriorating in the sun, but I've seen no evidence of that. Its not like they are cracking, thinning or even fading noticeably.

 

The more significant practical issue with not being covered is that they get dirty from insects, tree pollen and leaves, and squirrels etc. Water ponds in them sometimes and grows stuff.

 

I power wash them a few times a year and they look and perform almost as good as new. After power washing I then put them right back in the sun. 

 

Around the time I made the post I ordered covers to finally cover them. Currently sitting in my garage (LOL).  Not doing much good there. Keep thinking I'd wait to take the time to power wash again. That hasn't happened. I may do that today and will post my thoughts once done.

keep in mind that the UV damage that will occur over time will negate any warranty that you might have.  I had to prove to them my kayak wasn't UV damaged on my warranty and that it was just dirty becasue i washed it maybe 1 time in the 7 years I had it and that dirt made it look like UV damage.

I would add being covered is a draw for critters, especially mice!

That’s a great point. They seem to like it covered or not!
