I went striper fishing in Sandy Hook one day and was driving back home. On the way back, I saw an enormous lake and decided I had to give it a try. I had my rod and reel but realized I left all my boxes of bass lures at home. I made a split second decision not to leave but to use my 5 inch mag darter and proceeded to catch my PB smallmouth. It looked upwards of 7 pounds and I still throw that bronze shiner Mag Darter whenever there are big bass to be caught.

Either this story that unfortunately ended in a lost fish

Or this fish

With the devils horse fish, during that fishing day I had thrown like 5 different baits over an area that I felt held larger fish. And I was so convinced that the area had a larger fish that I decided to try one more lure, the devils horse. I fished it in open water at a very fast speed on a day that most wouldn’t consider a topwater day. I just did it because the lake is generally a good topwater lake and because the structural feature I was fishing was shallow and I felt that I could get a fish to react. Huge fish, but unfortunately lost it.

The second fish is more a culmination of hundreds of hours fishing that reservoir. I knew where to be, when to be there, and what to do. And combined with seasonal timing it resulted in my biggest NY bass that I am very proud of. I haven’t heard of a larger bass caught from that reservoir

1970'something ,  I was a noob at bass angling and getting skunked at a lake . I met another angler who stated he was doing quite well on a jig and pig which I had none of . I slid on a bullet weight , then slid on a black spinnerbait skirt , tied on a worm hook and Texas rigged a black Mister Twister twin tail grub . Bouncing the creation down a rip rap bank , I felt a tap , reeled in the slack and set the hook like Roland Martin . The most important fish I caught in my life and bass fishing would be much better after that .

I caught a fish that chomped my plastic worm in half and spit the loose end out on my boat. It was my last of that type and color and I not nothing else close to it and everything else wouldnt work. Took some mono and a small drop shot hook and sewed the plastic back together with the mono. Caught 2 more fish before it was to far past repairing.

Other than that my only other genius moment was when my brain said "dont go swimming out to your boat in 45 deg water" as I was thigh deep after stripping down to go in after it. (pro tip, make sure you dont have broken safety latches on your boat winch strap)

I'm with @A-Jay, purchasing a boat is my genius moment.

Lately, the purchase of a reliable 2-stage snow blower seems to be a pretty good moment too.

@A-Jay and @gimruis have it right - going from canoe to boat was the best decision I ever made for fishing.

@T-Billy Great idea for a thread!

I fished the Whitefish River in the UP of Michigan one balmy week. I rented an old, wooden rowboat, but still caught smallmouth two at a time, trolling around bridge supports. So, I told a couple buddies about the great fishing and we met there the next summer.

It was no longer balmy. It was blustery, gray and wet. These two guys had driven hundreds of miles because I gushed about the great fishing and two days in, with few fish, they wanted to stay in the warm cabin instead of heading out into the cold rain yet again.

So, I rose super early and alone, remembering a time in northwestern Ontario where a cold front had bunched the bass off a point. So, I went bouncing across the waves looking for a point. I fished one. I fished another. Then, BINGO! I caught bass (and walleye) as soon as my lure hit the bottom. I was the only one out there that morning and after catching ten fish to be sure, I bounced back to the cabin, pounded on the sleepy-heads' door, and yelled, "I FOUND 'EM!"

They scrambled into their clothes and we proceeded to shred our thumbs for five days.

So. Much. Fun!

Buying my 1st bait Langley casting reel and Conolin light weight tubular rod taking advice from pen pal Jason Lucas at age 12.

My 1st Lowrance portable Fish Lo K Tor flasher open up my fishing horizons and using topographic maps to mark where I caught bass, in 1960.

Making a tri color hair jig black back, purple center and brown belly allowing changing pork rind colors without changing jigs, game changer in 1971.

Using a 3/4 oz Scrounger jig with Rainbow trout color prototype 6” Sluggo, 1980. 10 years before anyone else had them.

I married a girl that had a mom that taught her how to cook really good. My genius moment!

My genius moment is realizing I am not a genius. ?

1) Making this contraption that I call my rod quiver. As you know we bass anglers always carry multiple rods.

I made this for an elderly guy, but he never called me back. With it, I can carry 3 rods in one hand and not 3 rods between my fingers which gets cumbersome really fast.

2) Devising my rod leash that will save anyone for losing their rig after a cast.

3) Building crankbaits and jerk baits and figuring out how to give them the right amount of ballast and they actually caught fish.

4) Coming up with the idea of putting “shark teeth” on my handmade top water propeller and popper baits, reminiscent of WWII planes.

5) Great and cool accomplishments no doubt. The most genius move I made however, was marrying my wife of 25 years. That’s Einstein caliber, lol.

mine.  my mom bought us a boat.  it had a 70hp Chrysler motor on it.  it died in the middle of elephant butte lake.  my brother was with me.  i rebuilt the carborator with a leatherman tool, and in my efforts killed the battery.  i took a piece of rope and wrapped it around the top of the motor and yanked.  it roared to life and ran smoother than it ever had.

my kid brother thought i was magic.  i bet he still thinks about it.  i might have been 19, and my brother was 15.

Well here’s one I can respond to, since I can only think of one off hand.
The moron moment one I didn’t want to bore ya’ll with a 10 chapter tome starting with 5 years old through to 70.
There was a small kayak tournament on one of the NY City reservoirs, I’d been just fishing saltwater and hadn’t done any freshwater fishing in years.
I brought a bunch of plastic jigs and some small plugs. As I was packing for the trip I found an old box of Mepps spinners which I hadn’t used in 20 years but figured what the heck.
After hrs of fishing with not much to show for it, I figured what do I have to lose and tied on a Mepps.
Well, that was the ticket and I was able to get over 15 smallmouths and managed to place 2nd in the tournament, just was a last minute decision to bring that box, saved the day.

Happened several years ago on a cold dreary November day. I had never really fished a jig and was determined to figure it out. I hiked out to a pond that I knew had good ones in it but can be kinda finicky. Brought 1 jig rod and a few spare jigs ...1 bag of trailers. Fished hard for several hours and only got 1 bite..but I made it count. Did a few measurements and according to what I read online the old girl was 8ish pounds. I've seen a few confirmed 8s and feel.comfortable with that number. Not bad for a first jig fish.

I took my girlfriend fishing late one night on a pitch black pond and told her I'd put her on a big fish. After roughly two hours of me paddling us around she hooked and caught her PB LM of 6lb. I married her a few years later and truly feel that bass helped.

She's a tractor riding, boat & trailer wiring beast, with a Doctorate, two Masters, and will even occasionally let me ride her tractor. They say opposites attract, so with her education the chance of me being a genius is pretty low.

@GreenPig

I think it's funny and ironic that you might have both landed your PB that night.

P. S. - I'd rather own that tractor than a Ranger boat!

I don't know if I have ever had a genius moment.  I get a big thrill from having a smarter than average moment.  Most of the time I am happy with getting to the lake, catching a couple of fish, and making it home without loosing or breaking something.  I may have to settle for laughing at my mistakes, over bragging about my success, but I always have a good time.

you all with smartly married wives.

i would argue there is no relationship between smarts and love.  i had no choice to love my wife.  i didnt make a smart decision to chase her around.  i was on auto pilot.  love. :D
