forums are sometimes the weirdest places.  a forum is a place where you can ask a simple yes/no question, and somebody will take it as an attack to their own way of living.  let me make up an example.

totally made up:

you ever have to put a muzzle on your dog?

EVERYONE!

only a bad dog owner needs to muzzle a dog...

it isn't the dog, it is you LOZER!!!

there are no bad dogs...only bad owners...you !@#$!@$!@#$!@#!! dirtbag!!

the topic can be anything!!  hahahahaha...  can a crankbait be used on a spinning rod?  yes/no.

can I prune my trees in the summer?  yes/no

do you drink your coffee with egg nog?  YES!YES!/no.   hahah..

I got a solid C- in my required college psychology  class.    I wish I could take it again in the modern world.  I am not that old and I have seen it really change.  I bet there could be a solid week of lecture on the human mind when it is offered an anonymous platform to read and offer opinions....hahhaha.  I've been guilty of it myself.  totally guilty.  just wondering what made my mind think it was okay to do it..

like all things everything isn't good or bad.  I love forums.  the commaradarie..  the s-talking.  but there is a dark side to all of it.

I’ve noticed the same thing you have and my conclusion is online lacks voice inflection and facial expression. I won’t forget the fact the some people are just downright crazy either and we do our best day to day in the real world to associate with only normal people. ;)

Plus almost everyone is a tough guy when on the internet as opposed to actual face to face interaction.

We're all here for our need of acceptance and ego beneath the surface, above the surface we are here to learn, share, and make friends.

Nobody would participate in forums especially the more knowledgeable unless there was a boost in acceptance and ego being generated from it.   Time is money, and nobody is paying 99% of people of forums to be there.   Therefore, people have to generate their own unique "income" for the time they invest on a forum.    For pure newbs, it's mostly about learning........for true SMEs, it's more about acceptance/validation and ego.    There is nothing wrong with that.   Humans have an inherit need to feel accepted in the communities they participate in.     I certainly do, and I certainly have an ego.....hopefully a normal one, but still an ego nonetheless.

To this point, this is why Facebook has killed 90% of the tech forums and diminished the other 10% significantly.   People realized it was easier to get the same acceptance and ego dopamine fix from a quick rather pointless post on their own "forum" per say.   Facebook is the ultimate ego stroke device.

The internet projects only a fraction of reality at best like a picture or video.    The internet is really only good at two things:

1. Cats pics/videos

2. Use your imagination

Ha Ha , yes happens all the time.

You just gotta be thick skinned and just roll with it....... I'm actually entertained by it.

Example:

I bought a new Ford F-250 so joined a Ford truck forum in hopes of gaining knowledge.

I'm an older guy and don't like my vehicle doing things that I can do so I asked " how can I disable auto high beam ? "

A response I got " if you can't handle modern technology, you have no business driving a new truck. Those features are for your safety so I suggest NOT DRIVING after dark ". ?

I replied back " good one ? "

I my honest & humble option,

this particular forum checks more boxes for the membership

than most are willing to admit

or are perhaps even aware of; including me.

Especially Now.

A decent indicator of the above may occur during those rare occasions

when the site is 'down for mainainance'.

How many times (per hour) do you check to see if it's back up ?

And how much 'relief' do you feel when it does ?

Kinda like how you cant tell tone in a text message..the word OK can be acceptance, a question or even condescension. Without that your left to decipher it based on your current mood, the way you perceive the conversation to be going and your preconceived notions of the person your talking to. That's a dangerous combination.

That said I've had very few bad interactions here...the positive ones, coupled with ones where I learned something greatly outnumber the negative ones. There are jerks everywhere, just far fewer here from my experience and I just work around them. Guess if that changes ill call it a day, but until then I quite enjoy what @Glenn has created here.

I feel like I would get along with just about anyone on here in the fishing realm.  Except those that are drop shotting.  Then we will have a disagreement.

I suppose between that and that I like using Ploppers/Choppos means we can't be friends anymore ?

What’s better, Amsoil or Royal Purple?

Mobile 1 extended performance.

Any opinion other than this won't be taken seriously and shows illiteracy and lack of character

and have to assume that the individual has never succeeded at anything in life. ?

The use of forums, and this one especially, is an extension of something in my opinion. Usually it’s an extension of a hobby. This forum is an excellent way to be near fishing when you can’t actually be on the water. Whether your here to learn, give your own advice, or just partake in general discussions regarding bass fishing, it’s an extension of the hobby that is bass fishing that we all share. I use this forum so much because the next best thing to fishing is talking fishing with other fishermen. So I come here to learn, give advice when I can, and just engage in general bass fishing conversation when I can’t be on the water, because fishing is omnipresent in my head but I can’t be on the water every waking second.

This is the only forum I use because bass fishing is the only passion deep enough for me to want to be near, around, or discussing it CONSTANTLY. And even though there are other bass and fishing forums, I can’t imagine I’d stand anything to gain from them that I don’t already get from BR, like the information, camaraderie, and many other things.

Hang on.....they have Auto High Beam now?  I must be old, too.  I don't want that or half the crap that vehicles do now.  (says guy whose fishing truck is a 1968 F-100)

BTW.....I'm on this forum because it's nice to be around people that are smarter than I am.  Pure and simple....

Bass fishing is the most humbling thing I've done seriously, and I'd say about 10% of my time on the water I feel confident in what I'm doing.

You probably just need a good leash.   Be sure to get a fluorocarbon one,  they’re more sensitive.
