After looking at Navionics, I still am very attracted to the final image I show. There on Navionics I spy an underwater point, a ledge, a creek channel swing, shelves, drains, etc. A lot in the same area. That is where I think I will go first. And just graph around and see what I see

If you got the full-paid version...you can also set it to differentiate hard from soft bottom.

If you look on the right you'll see historical maps. This particular link is for Lake Whitney in TX and has maps all the way back to 1892. 

 

Point being (pardon the pun) as @Catt mentioned, there may be additional information on the pre-fill maps for reservoirs.

Today modern technology is ruining anglers!

 

I get asked all the time if I take paper maps in the boat. 

 

Hint: The vertical lines on a map are known as lines of longitude & the horizontal lines are known as lines of latitude.

 

Take an old homestead for example. Look on the map, measure the longitude & latitude. Walk over to the boat enter that information into the Lowrance & BAM I got a waypoints.

I don’t know what to mark as a solution on this thread because there are so many good posts. This has been one of the most informative and helpful that I’ve started here.

I always get the paper maps...aside from more detail.

If I'm lookin at wind, for or against, I like to look at the big picture (pun intended)?

My electronics only have GPS because fishing in a marsh/swamp it's nice to know how to get out!

A 2 dimensional map with extreme details that took Surveyors years to compile.
