Jonas Staggs Posted December 8, 2022 Posted December 8, 2022 Next chance I get, I'm going to fish a lake that does allow you to fish all the way up against the flat wall part of the dam. I have never fished that side of the lake as it's quite difficult to get to, but I'm going to go for it next time out. My reasoning is that since it's winter right now, it's the deepest part of the lake, the large cement dam should be holding heat, and it's also surrounded by riprap which should hold heat as well. Would this be correct thinking in regards to where the fish are this time of year? How would I fish right up against the flat wall of the dam? What baits to throw? The place does hold big bass. I have talked to some guys that have caught some 8 lbs there. I'm on foot and getting there is going to be about a 1+ hour hike in steep terrain and have to backpack everything in and out. I have never fished deep water like this. Any advice or suggestions is appreciated. Thank you Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted December 9, 2022 Super User Posted December 9, 2022 Jonas, I would try to pick a warmer day for this trip. Since your hiking in, I'd pack one rod/reel, and your other things in your pack. Travel light, and you'll enjoy this more. You might take along some crankbaits, lipless, and soft plastic baits also. Fan cast the area with different baits at different depths. Also, dress appropriately for this trip. You don't want to hike that far in, then, be too cold to have any fun. Good luck. 1 Quote
Fishlegs Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 Soft plastic swimbaits/a-rig near the wall, and crankbairts, and craws for the riprap. Good luck. 1 Quote
Super User AlabamaSpothunter Posted December 9, 2022 Super User Posted December 9, 2022 If there are Strippers, throw a bucktail jig, and hold on. Fishlegs likely said the best in my experience, small swimbaits fished anywhere you can find current breaks. Fish hold on the actual Dam walls I've found as well, whether you can get to them is another story. The RipRap on either side of Dams is always good for cranking 1 Quote
Will Ketchum Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 Let someone know where you're going in case of emergency. See if you're getting cell coverage. Hell, toss in a few night-walkers with no weight. They'll sink slowly to the bottom covering all depths. 1 Quote
camman Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 I’ve done well using a Senkos against dam walls as it can slowly find the depth they are at. 2 Quote
