basspro96 Posted December 17, 2010 Posted December 17, 2010 How do these ride and fish? Me and my Dad have never owned a triton before. Just wondering how the storage is. I heard with the 225 its an 80 mph boat. I've also heard they chine walk bad. But I guess thats fine. I need to learn how to really drive a boat. All help is much appreciated! Quote
Carrington Posted December 17, 2010 Posted December 17, 2010 i havnt done any research at all on this boat but that would be very impressive in my book if it went 80 with a 225. All my friends boats go 70-72 with the same size engine. Quote
Triton21 Posted December 17, 2010 Posted December 17, 2010 Best ride & driest ride I ever had was on the Ohio River with 4 ft white caps in a TR22 Triton. They are no longer made. I think you can't go wrong with a Triton boat. I love mine. Unless it has had a lot of motor work and tweaking I would be surprised that it would do 80mph with no gear, only a couple gal of gas, and a 98lb weakling at the wheel. I can get 68mph out of my TR21X, 225 Optimax and a light load of fishing gear, less than 10 gal gas and my 180lb body at the wheel. Tritons are a great fishing platform and a pleasure to fish. jbh3 Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 I have a 2007 20X w/225 Pro XS. It is a great fishing platform. Plenty of storage and a good, dry ride. Not as bad to walk as the older TR hulls, but will need to be driven on top end. It is NOT an 80 MPH boat. You should see low 70's depending on load. Some of the later 20X's rated for 250 will approach 80. Good luck! Quote

You say you need to learn how to drive a boat. Do you really care about 80 mph? You're fishing dude! I'd want to know about storage, stability, reliability, etc. Quote
basspro96 Posted December 18, 2010 Author Posted December 18, 2010 I know how to drive a boat. But I've never faced chine walking before. seventies are plenty fast for me. My dad yells at me if I get over forty half the time! Haha! Quote
SeanW Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 Tritons are known as requiring more actual driving then alot of other boats. They are good boat, I doubt you will ever see close to 80mph. Most 20ft boats are gonna have ample storage. Dry ride is gonna depend on the driver, and his abilities to handle a boat in rough water. If you have never handled chine wallking then you dont know how to "drive" a boat. But there are video's on You Tube that will help. Quote
Chaz Hickcox Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 I know how to drive a boat. But I've never faced chine walking before. seventies are plenty fast for me. My dad yells at me if I get over forty half the time! Haha! I hear ya. I just upgraded from a 93 Javelin with a 150 Johnson on it to a 2004 Bass Cat Pantera IV with a 200 Merc. I've scared the heck out of myself at 69mph on the chine walks. Took some time, but with a friend of mine who's used to the 'Skeeter Walk' that helped me I've got it down. As far as the TR 20, I know Triton makes a d**n fine boat, and another friend of mine has a TR21 that he absolutely loves. Quote
mctech Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 i have a 04 21x and it can be a handfull between 68 and 72 mph you just have to learn how to drive thru the chine i would go slow take your time and learn to drive it tritons are great boats but can get loose in a heart beat. good luck and be careful Quote
lynyrdsky1 Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 Quick question does chine walk only happen when you go above 60? Cause I've driven My dads Champion at around 55 or 60 and it didnt walk at all. Quote
SeanW Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 There are several factors that cause chine walk. My Bass Cat will start to walk at about 67mph, but its very easy to drive thru. Its usually happening on most boats when it reach's the minimum amount of pad on the water. Meaning you are usually close to the speed the hull was designed to go. There are adjustments that can be made to change it(motor lower on transom). Quote
Buzbait88 Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 Most champions don't chine walk as well as rangers. Tritons are notorious for it because of the design of the hull, but thats what makes them faster. 80 probably not, but 75 is possible with a pro XS and low 70's with the original opti. Quote
basspro96 Posted December 22, 2010 Author Posted December 22, 2010 This one has a evinrude on the back! Thanks for all the info! I'm guessing that chine walking will just be the nature of the beast. Quote
mctech Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 a 20x with a 225 is going to be a fast ride and over 70 easy. if you get this boat take the time to learn it because it will chine. i dont know the set up but with a 8 in jackplate and a tempest prop she will fly. i know i said tempest prop on a rude but that seems to be the set up. good luck with your toon. BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted December 28, 2010 BassResource.com Administrator Posted December 28, 2010 Just an fyi - We have an '03 20' Ranger with a 225 and it does 70mph, no chine walk. When we first got it, it chined right around 65. But a few adjustments later it was dialed in. I don't feel you have to put up with chine walking. I think you can play around with props and engine height to get better performance. You may or may not eliminate it, but you can certainly diminish it. Quote
bmadd Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 As I worked the Triton Boat Owner's Tournament on Kentucky Lake in 2009, a Triton employee mocked an older gentleman who the day before had asked him to help set up his boat so that he could go faster than 62 mph in his 21' boat with a 250 without walking. The guy continued to laugh and say that the guy just didn't know how to drive his boat and that it can go 75 if he knew how to handle it. I asked him if he couldn't change the prop or jack plate and he looked at me like I was crazy. I do not have a high opinion of their boats. Quote
CAdeltaLipRipper Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 This one has a evinrude on the back! Thanks for all the info! I'm guessing that chine walking will just be the nature of the beast. In that case the boat is garbage.U most likely will go negative 80 mph and then sink to the bottom with the rest of the e rudes Quote
