carrageenan Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 What are you driving? How do you transport your rods? Do you wish you had better mpg? Saw my friend's trailblazer, and I'm jealous of the headroom! It got me thinking, what's the best vehicle for fishing. 1 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted December 5, 2022 Super User Posted December 5, 2022 I drive a mini cooper countryman ALL4s and tow my kayak trailer. I store my rods inside on transport and that is usually 8'+ fly rods. 1 Quote
DanielG Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 I do an F150 v8 2015. Fiberglass cover over the back. So good dry room there. Aluminum body. I do a steady 21.5 mpg or so the computer tells me. 2 Quote
papajoe222 Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 I switched from an eight passenger SUV to a Jeep Grand Cherokee. It pulls my Tracker with no problem. I have switched from a system that hung from the ceiling in the old SUV, to either storing my rods in the rod locker, or putting the rear seat down and laying them flat in the Jeep. I live in Illinois, so my fuel mileage is what I consider an improvement at 19 mpg. In hill country, that will drop a couple mpg. Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted December 5, 2022 Super User Posted December 5, 2022 In the rod-compartment of the boat usually. Oh...shore fishing. Back of this beast. 2001 Silverado LS, 5.3l V-8, 5-speed auto, electronic 4WD, tow package...tows the F-9 like the boat ain't even behind it. 2 Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted December 5, 2022 Super User Posted December 5, 2022 kayak fits in the bed. Rods go on the passenger seat, gear in the back seat. I don’t care much about mpg but I’m fishing within an hour of home most trips. 2 Quote

Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted December 5, 2022 Global Moderator Posted December 5, 2022 F-150 that’s a gas hog. Fortunately for me I have a company truck so I spend zero dollars on gas throughout the week and I have a ton of lakes within 20 minutes of my house with the two closest being 3 and 5 miles away. I store my rods in the rod locker. 1 Quote
Susky River Rat Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 Ram 1500 V6 not the hemi. Towing my boat average around 18 to the places I go most. Not towing on the highway about 23. 4 Quote
Deephaven Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 I use my wives Jeep Grand Cherokee to tow the boat. Only negative is that it means I have to trust her to drive my car that day. 1 Quote
volzfan59 Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 I have a 2017 Toyota Tacoma that I drive and pull my boat with. Rods are in the rod lockers Quote
Super User WRB Posted December 5, 2022 Super User Posted December 5, 2022 Oddly I haven’t owned a pick up truck ever! Back in the 60’s To this day owned 2 vehicles, 1 was a Chevy Suburban the other a hot street car. 2005 bought my wife a MB C55 Amg and sold my Suburban in 2013 for GL450, still have both cars. Smells like fish Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 Our 2018 Toyota Rav was responsible for about 3 broken rods last year but this year we added a GMC Yukon and I’ve got room for rods galore now. Still considering a truck if I’d get any use from it. If I had a truck I’d have to get a boat and then I’d have to go fishing ? Quote

I am spoiled with a company truck that pulls the boat to the ramp, I am fortunate enough to work for a company that doesn't mind personal use of the truck as long as its within reason. Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted December 5, 2022 Global Moderator Posted December 5, 2022 Don’t own a boat and never have. 2015 Audi Q5 SUV I just lay them down one end to the other Mike 1 Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted December 5, 2022 Super User Posted December 5, 2022 I keep the rods that I plan to use in the boat rod lockers. I pull the boat with a 2020 Chevy 1500. 4 Quote
Woody B Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 My rods are on the deck. Mrs. B's in stored under the casting deck. I had carpet on the deck extension that matched the carpet on the rest of the boat. The plywood warped up really bad. I got a new piece of plywood and sprayed it with bedliner instead of carpet. It doesn't look as good but it's not warping. 1 Quote
JohnFromLisbon Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 A tiny Japanese hatchback built out of Ford parts. Fun to drive, fits all my rods, a tote, an overnight bag, a 3700 tackle bag, a roadie 24, a fishing buddy and my fun size sheep dog and I don't even have to fold the seats down. Just keep in mind I'm on the other side of the Atlantic. 9 Quote

Super User TOXIC Posted December 5, 2022 Super User Posted December 5, 2022 If taking my boat it’s a 21ft tackle box and rod carrier. If we are taking my buddies boat, I can lay them corner to corner in the bed of the truck. They are never in the cab. 2016 Silverado High Country 5.3, 75,000 miles. I get 18-23mpg not towing depending on season, terrain, etc. Towing I get 13-16mpg. 3 Quote
