Meet Finn ~

[A-Jay]

This is Finn. 

We know very little about him as he was picked up as a stray by the wonderful folks at the Otsego County animal shelter.

Seems like he’s at least a year old, about 55 lbs. or so, in great shape and might be some type of Lab mix.

He’s High Energy for sure.  

Lynn and & I are not fostering him, more like sponsoring him. 

Meaning, he’s not living with us (for now anyway).

We’ve been taking him on daily walks from & back to the shelter.

 

Patiently working towards gaining his trust and doing what we can to modify his behavior to be more socially acceptable.

Doesn’t seem like Finn has much in the way of training #hideyourcrazy.

We both feel he has quite a bit of potential, most of them do.

 

Today Finn made his first visit to Pawz Pack Inn (our place).

We let him run around a bit off lead, worked with him some and then took him back to the shelter.

But not before letting him pick his name.

BTW, envie that high fence...it would save me a lot of time searching and calling "Max! COME!!" whenever he decides the height of our fenced yard is no impediment to adventure ?

Thank you my friend.

Learned the hard way that we needed at least 6 ft.

Some spots (Back corners) have an extended section at the bottom that's buried 

a couple of feet to slow down the escape of 'diggers'. 

Deer still jump it from time to time.

Scared the heck out of me a couple of times at night.

Just don't expect it.

Our dogs always know they are there though . . .

Great way to choose a name ?. We may try that.  The wife and I are having a hard time deciding on the name whenever the new pup comes. Our last two Shepherds were named Magnum. We’re thinking about Thor, Skeeter, Rip, Bubba and Magnum.

Picking the name is one of my favorite parts of this deal.

Between the fosters, sponsored pups and our own dogs,

we've been through a few over the years.

We follow a few 'rules'.

Name can't sound like or rhyme with the name of any other dog we currently have. 

We never 're-use' names or use the name of our friend's dogs.

Try to avoid using common 'people names'.

Need to be able to shout it and have it sound ok, because that's gonna happen eventually.

Internet is a Great resource & help in many ways when it comes to picking names.

One of our malamute breeder friends uses a 'theme' to name each litter.

 The last name of famous criminals was one of my favorites

as was Disney characters & even Muppets.

At some point it pays to get creative.

We got more snow last night, I think Finn's going to be liking it.

Good on you for putting in the time and effort to get him prepared for his forever home.  I was cruising through my Facebook posts and one of my old fishing friends in Florida put up a post with pictures of a surrendered litter of Weimaraner/Doberman cross puppies.  Just happen to be 2 of my favorite breeds.  It took all my strength to not have him go get one for me while I drove down.

Spent a couple more hours today with this dude.

Lots of leash work & some play time.

Easy to tell which Finn prefers . . .

Put in a few more hours with Finn this morning.

Trying to build & keep some momentum going with this little guy.

As a true handful on lead, today we introduced Finn to the Dean & Tyler No-Pull Harness. 

When matched with a properly fitted martingale collar (with buckle)

this is IMO, an effective tool and one tailor made for Mr Finn. 

We've had great success improving on lead manners

with other fosters as well as own own dogs. 

Finn figured it out in short order and we went to work. 

Plan on working with him again tomorrow morning (Saturday).

Should be able to get a few action pics or some video.

Finn & I are learning a little more about each other every day.

Some one's going to get a new 'best friend' soon.

Local Animal shelter is closed on Sunday 

so Finn & I both got a break.

He seemed pretty excited when we met this morning though.

The training continues. 

It rarely matters where or from what type of circumstances these guys come from.

But where they are and where they are headed can be liberating.

Past two days have been productive.

Finn seems more willing to trust us a little more each time we visit.

He's a tug of war fan to no ones surprise. 

Social medias doing it's thing and we're starting to get 'inquires' regarding Finn.

his new forever home today.

Routinely called a 'two week trial', but if all goes well

that deal will become permanent.  

Ya Finn.

Also we already have our next 'shelter project' picked out.

Got the OK to start working with Aries;

a 4 year old male Akita.

Next week should be fun.

Breed 'reputation' may be why he's been at the shelter since September

and precisely why we've chosen to work with him.

While each animal is different, I've already done a preliminary meet & greet,

and Aries is a totally love bug.

High expectations going in.
