Hey y’all,

When do you like a lighter lipless? Talking 1/4oz or below

Got some to try from Black Friday sales. My thought is that in the winter a lighter weight on yo-yo retrieve might produce better. Thoughts?

Im also interested in anyone’s success with the 6th sense suspending trap, if you don’t mind me piggybacking.

man.  i used to kill the white bass on Elephant Butte with a 1/4oz Rattletrap.  ( i think it was a rattletrap).

Right now i am all LV500.  i like how heavy it is and how it sinks so fast.  ripping it thru grass has been kinda fun.

I have used them casting to the edges of reed beds and done really well with the 1/4 RES. It was spring time so perhaps the bass were filling up on smaller baitfish. I haven't used it a lot outside of this scenario though.

I have a lot of success with the 1/4oz RES right after the shad spawn.

Fish it over the top of submerged grass, stop and go on shallow, wind blown flats, or over rip rap. The bites I've had on them are pretty violent.

Do you find that most of them eat it like that? I bought a nice ark z series 1/4 ounce lipless and discovered that it is deadly on shallow wind blown banks during the fall but man all of the 2lb plus fish had it like that, really hard to get the fish un hooked without injuring it and the hooks on the thing are so sharp by the time one barn is out another one is in. I just had to quit throwing it because I hate killing fish but it was very effective.

I was a fan of both Traps and Spots for decades until trying out Yo-Zuri 3D prism Vibes.

Yes they cost 2X the originals but out fish then on the fall.

Take a look at the Mini Rattle n vibe 3/16 oz model.

1/4oz traps and RES work best for me mid fall to early winter.  The bite picks up again in the prespawn, but just about everything works in the prespawn lol.  If you are looking for a slower fall while yo yoing you want to make sure thy arent too small in size.  Some 1/4 model traps are much smaller and thinner then the 1/2, which makes them just as if not faster then the larger sizes.

Havent used the 6th sense suspending, but have used the suspending Ima lipless heavily during the coldest months the past few years.  Its basically like a combination of a lipless and JB, which makes it very versatile.  Although I do catch fish with it often Ive never had a day where I have just beat them down on it.  What I do is I use it to determine what kind of mood the fish are in.  If they hit it on a longer pause I throw a JB.  If they hit in the middle of a retrieve I throw a CB.  If I have followers that wont commit I go to a regular lipless, the faster ROF can make those followers react.

Not many. The Suspending Quake is a pretty good sized bait, similar sized to most other companies 3/4oz baits. That particular fish just happened to really eat it, but it still came out easy.

I don't have an issue with them swallowing 1/4oz traps at all.

Shallow water ?

Some of our marshes are only 2' of water. I throw a 1/4 oz Rat-L-Trap, hold the rod tip high & burn it. You will see the wake coming for it!

I never yo/yo a Trap!

I adjust how deep it runs by speeding up or slowing down, raising the rod tip or dropping it. I will even kneel-n-reel a Trap.

Y'all be surprised how far a bass will come to eat a Trap.

Same here. If I'm using a yo yo retrieve, or stroking a lipless, I want one that has action on the fall.

Here's a tip for the OP: After the fall, let your lipless sit motionless on the bottom for a while. Often times as you lift it up afterword, a bass will either already have it, or one will hit it as it rises.  I've had them pick up a blade bait just sitting on the bottom in super cold water.

Change the treble hooks for single hooks. You may need to add some wire around the shaft of the hooks to maintain the proper balance on the lure

For me, it's less about the weight and more about the sound profile. In the colder months, I find a "softer" sound like the Rattlin' Rapala or Booyah One Knocker shine more than a loud rattling bait like the Rat-L-Trap or RES. I'll even go down to a silent model like the Thunderhawk Sergeant silent version, had some great winter days on that.

I like a 1/4 ounce when I want a slow rate of fall to keep the bait in the the water column longer. I also like to use the smaller size when I'm fishing from the bank, in shallow water, or if there is a lot of action on the surface.
