I drove by the launch point for one of my favourite back lakes and it's frozen in, so that's officially the end of 2022 bass season for me. ?

It's time to pack up my gear, so I backed off the drags on all my reels (I've seen that recommended in a few places). Then I got thinking about cold weather storage.  I assume it's beneficial to bring my reels into the house, rather than leave them in the garage?  Our winter temperatures will typically get down to 0F some nights, but can swing fairly wildly through the season.  Is storing reels indoors a must.. a good idea.. or don't bother kind of thing?  What about tackle - specifically thinking about line and soft plastics?  I assume rods are not really affected by cold?

I just bring everything inside - set aside a section of the basement that's for nothing but fishing gear and the tools to maintain it all.

I normally bring my rods and reels into my basement for the winter.

Its probably dependent on how cold your garage gets though.  My garage is fully insulated (not heated) and its generally above freezing in there all winter.  I'm sure my gear would be fine out there all winter.

Another vote for basement.  The garage is too cold in the winter. I have a dedicated corner in my basement where my gear stays year round. Work bench, rod holder and 2 book cases worth of tackle and gear.

It's not ideal, but I have left rods, reels, and tackle in an unheated, uninsulated garage all winter without any noticeable problems.   So if that's your only option, you should be fine.

Usually, soft plastics and reels will come in though.

I store most of my rods and reels in a garage that is kept at 40 - 45 degrees all winter.  I have never had a problem storing them this way.  I also store some rods and reels in a shed at my cabin were is gets below 0 degrees.  I have never had a problem with those rods and reels although they are used less often.

Mine live in my unheated, uninsulated garage year round in Ohio. Never an issue.

I always bring mine in and put them in the basement after every fishing trip. That way I have them  in to check my line and see if I need to cut some line off. If any need any type of cleaning or replacing line I have them in to work on them.

When we built this house I had a closet made for extra rods.  What  ever isn’t in the boat gets put in the closet.  I have never stored them in the house.
