Walking School Bus Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 I just made a deal to buy a canoe. It's a Wenonah Boundary Waters kevlar, 17', and I can't wait to do some trips with it as a tandem and as a solo. Anyone have one of these? Quote
Super User senile1 Posted December 9, 2010 Super User Posted December 9, 2010 I don't have a canoe but I have plans for one in my future. You might want to re-post this in the boating section to get more responses . . . . or maybe a moderator will come along and move it for you. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 9, 2010 Super User Posted December 9, 2010 The shop I work out of sells Swift kayaks and canoes, which are somewhat similar to yours. I'm familiar with them. Very lightweight. David Yost, a very well known hull designer lives in my area. Chances are, if you've paddled it, DY prototyped it. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted December 9, 2010 Super User Posted December 9, 2010 Wenonah makes a good boat for sure. Is yours the standard kevlar or the ultra-light? The Wenonah web site shows the standard at 53lbs and the ultralight at 42lbs... Outstanding if you have to portage. My canoe is only 34lbs, but it's also only 11'6", with aluminum so thin it will bend if you give it a mean look ;D Not a river boat at all but great for the small lakes that I fish. Are you going to fish from yours or just use it for trips? Quote
Walking School Bus Posted December 10, 2010 Author Posted December 10, 2010 It's the ultra-light 42 lbs. Yes, I will fish in it. The outfitter I'm buying it from uses this canoe to rent to trippers and replaces them each year, selling the used canoes. I rent from this outfitter every year and he's great. The canoe is in great shape. 8-) Quote

It's a tandem, but I use it only to fish, and I use it solo. I paid the full price, there was nothing available used, but it was that or nothing. You'll probably love that boat. It's large enough for you to have access to all your stuff close by and offer good stability. It's not the fastest canoe out there, but it's a lot faster than mine. Good luck with it!! Quote
B-Dozer Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 Looks good! All I use are kayaks or canoes. Try using a kayak paddle, works good and you can set it across to fish. We don't need no stinkin' motors! Quote

What width canoe do you use a kayak paddle with? My understanding is it works best on narrow canoes, such as solo models, not 36" wide like his Wenonah. Quote
B-Dozer Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 I have an Oldtown k-140 kayak (14 ft.) so I use that paddle with my Grumman canoe. I'll have to measure the length of the paddle, and the width of the canoe tomorrow. Works for me because I can set it across the width and use it to set my rod on as a rest. I also paddle from the rear (which is narrower) and my two dogs ride towards the front, for ballast. Quote

Hey Marty, My kayak is 30" wide, the paddle is an 8', my canoe is 36". I have torn cartilage in both knees, so I don't kneel on the bottom as some do. (or like I used to) Hopefully you know someone you can borrow a paddle from so you can try it for a day, just to see if it works for you. Quote
Vooden Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 Light is nice. I have a River ridge, which is very comfortable, but hard to manage by myself. The Wenona will be nice when you're roofing it by yourself. Quote
bigfruits Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 youre gonna love it. watch out for shallow rocks. kevlar does not like collisions. in the boundary waters you shouldnt have that problem! Quote
