IntroC Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 I have a small 12ft aluminum boat that has been sitting in the backyard for ages and I'm thinking of putting a motor on it to get back into small streams and cricks. I already have a small elec.trolling motor but would like to put something along the lines of a small gas powered kicker motor on the back for a little more speed. I plan on mainly using it for hunting purposes. I'm curious if anyone has a setup like this and how fast a 2.5hp motor would push a small boat like this? The boat is a plain jane aluminum boat with aluminum bench seats. Thanks fellers. Quote
northern basser Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 I've done a lot of duck hunting in smaller aluminum v's and jon's. A 2.5 will push you better than a TM, but if you add weight(decoys, dogs....) your not going to be breaking any speed records. A 4 or 5 horse isn't that much bigger and will do a much better job. Personally, I wouldn't even consider anything less than a 4 in any situation. 1 Quote
Triton21 Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 SLOW! I had a boat very similar to yours in the late '60s and early '70s. I had a 3 hp motor that worked a heck of a lot better than rowing. I caught lots of fish from that boat and have many fond memories of those days. My advise is stick a small outboard on it and enjoy. Kelley Quote
IntroC Posted December 8, 2010 Author Posted December 8, 2010 Any guesses on the speed you would get out of a 2.5 to 5.5 motor mph wise? Thanks. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted December 8, 2010 Super User Posted December 8, 2010 You may get on plane with the 5HP depending on the total weight, but no way with the 2.5. I would guess 3-4 mph with the 2.5 hp and 10 mph with the 5 hp. I used to run a Merc.2.2 on a 10' jon boat and it was just a little faster than one of former 4 hp rated Minn Kota electric motors "back in the day". Quote
backseatk Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 can you say putt putt putt. put on one a little bigger. if its free ok but i wouldnt buy anything that small. 5 hp would be better Quote
Scanoe Boy Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 You should be able to get up to at least 7-9 mph. I have a Pelican Bayou 160 scanoe (16'3" and 40" bottom) with a Yamaha 2.5 4 stroke and I can reach those speeds (GPS tested) with about 600lbs of passengers and cargo, not including the boat itself @115 lbs. Considering that a scanoe is a full displacement hull (like a barge, never meant to plane) and a jon boat is planing hull (flat bottom boat designed to plane) you should be able to go faster than those speeds. The biggest disadvantage is the 2.5 motor uses an internal fuel tank, which holds a quarter of a gallon of gas and lasts a little over an hour @ WOT. But that means I get about 30-40 mpg @ WOT. It is very cheap to operate all day, just hard to refuel when the waves get bigger. Quote
Brian Goldsborough Posted June 7, 2020 Posted June 7, 2020 How quick would a 2.5 h.p. 2 stroke move. 12 ft kayak? I'm about 250, plus gear ..let's say 300lbs total? Thanks! Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted June 7, 2020 Super User Posted June 7, 2020 I have a 12 foot jb, with a 2.5. And I weigh 250. My best guess would be around 5 mph. I would think a kayak would go a little faster than that due to the shape of it. 1 Quote

I've found only a few mounts that I think may work, cause I only got about 5.5" by 3" deep of mounting room. 1 Quote
Ron Vance Posted June 21, 2021 Posted June 21, 2021 MY 12 FOOT JON BOAT HAS A TAG ON IT WHICH SAYS A 2.5 MOTOR. DOES THIS MEAN ITS THE BIGGEST MOTOR I CAN PUT ON IT? Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted June 21, 2021 Super User Posted June 21, 2021 No - you can put any size motor you want on it. However, should you have an accident or get inspected by the water patrol for any reason - sometimes the reason is that they have to make their quota of inspections this month - there are consequences for having a larger motor mounted on the boat and they ain't good. Should you accelerate too swiftly with a 5 hp motor on a 2 hp rated transom you are likely to crack/break the transom. Not good. 1 Quote
Deephaven Posted June 22, 2021 Posted June 22, 2021 My first boat was a 2hp on a 10'er. It made a wave, but that is about it. Good for back trolling not traversing water. Quote
Aeronca Posted August 8, 2021 Posted August 8, 2021 I just bought an older 12 ft aluminum boat that has an 8 horse Johnson. No tags that tell what engine to use. Is that too much engine for a 12 foot boat? I have not had it on the water yet. Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted August 8, 2021 Super User Posted August 8, 2021 8HP on a 12' Aluminum - you should be good. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted August 10, 2021 Super User Posted August 10, 2021 Faster than paddling and a lot less tiresome. Quote
Ratherbefishing75 Posted August 11, 2021 Posted August 11, 2021 I put a 4HP Johnson on the back of my 16foot canoe with a 55 thrust pound trolling motor on the front so far so good. And it’s only rated for a 2 hp th best advice is to Research it. U tube and on this wed sight Quote

Ratherbefishing75 Posted August 11, 2021 Posted August 11, 2021 I’m going out tomorrow night and can take some pictures when in under way I can’t seem to figure out the video thing got that idea From wingman outfitters and it’s a fraction of the cost lol the only disadvantage is with all that gear it’s trailer only now lol I’ve been thinking of getting a small kayak for the smaller body’s of water that don’t have a ramp 19 minutes ago, Rocketvapor said: I like the ice chest mounts.
