I've been 190 on a quarter mile drag strip. I've been 69 on a water ski. The water ski felt faster. I hope the "wrong" people don't see this. The local police have a twin engine boat that patrols one of the lake I fish. One of the officers said it will go 78mph. He said they raced an Allison bass boat, and the bass boat just drove away from them like they were sitting still. FWIW there is no speed limits. An old guy I see at the landing occasionally sold his Tracker and bought a new Vexus with 300 horsepower. I asked him how fast it would go. He said "45 with me in it" and laughed. He said he'd never had it past 1/2 throttle. Fast is only one aspect. Lack of brakes is another. Navigating waves is another. Navigating swells is another Navigating wakes is another. Just because a boat can go 80mph doesn't mean it should. 2 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted November 19, 2022 Super User Posted November 19, 2022 80 mph in a bass boat is a rare event under ideal conditions. 70 mph is faster then 99% of bass boater can handle under rough water conditions....but the driver doesn’t know that until it’s too late. Tom 1 Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted November 19, 2022 Super User Posted November 19, 2022 When I sold my Javelin last year, we took it for a test ride, it had the 225 not the 300+hp modified engine on it but still ran 76 with both of us in it but stripped of TM batteries. charger, TM and no gear, and only about 10 gallons of gas, so it was running pretty light. I told him since it has been a while since it was in the water, I would drive it first to make sure it was all good to go. I slowly eased the power to in intervals until I felt it was ready, then I trimmed it up and aired it out, 76.2 on the in dash gps. I looked over at the guy buying it and it was very obvious he had never been that fast in a boat, you could see the panic and fear all over his face. It was a dual console so your cheeks were not blown back past your ears. I then put him in the driver's and let him drive while I was showing him and teaching stuff about the boat. He got up to about 50mph and after a bit I told him he could go ahead and hit it and I would try to teach him a little about driving one with chine walk. I got a real quick, NOPE! I'm good. He's the kind that hopefully does not try to run one WOT for a long time. Quote

Yeah, no different than cars, even modest compacts can go over 100 MPH, performance models another 40-70 MPH on top of that, doesn't mean you should try to exit the highway at those speeds, everyone gets that, not sure why some boat guys don't get that. Car or boat, drive the conditions. Quote

None of the lakes I fish on have any kind of speed limit. FWIW, I'm not asking for more regulations on lakes, just stating that, at least around here there aren't any. Quote

Ya - we got all kinds of regulations around here. Some lakes are limited to 10hp, some have lake-wide no wake, and even Minnetonka at 14,000+ acres has a speed limit of 40mph. Quote

Susky River Rat Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 I run a Yamaha 60/40 jet. My personal opinion is they are the better motor. I was in a stripped down hull version of the same boat I have and they come with mercs. I was not impressed. I do not know how he had his boat weighed though which becomes extremely crucial with jets. Quote
Junk Fisherman Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 Yamaha F175 I bought this motor because of the reputation of its "Legendary Reliability." Yeah, not so much for me. I definitely won't be going out of my way to buy a Yamaha in the future. Quote
