Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted November 10, 2022 Global Moderator Posted November 10, 2022 Water temp I would have to say 32 when it becomes solid haha. Although I’ve only seen that in some coves and creek arms. Air temp, maybe 25 or below when the guides keep freezing over 5 Quote
Super User gim Posted November 10, 2022 Super User Posted November 10, 2022 Water temp, around 50 degrees on the low end. Air temp? I routinely fish when it's about 40 degrees out in the spring or fall. On the high end, the water doesn't usually get above about 80 degrees here in July. But once the air temp breaches about 90, especially if its also humid, I can't do it. I don't have much tolerance for fishing in extreme heat. 2 Quote

I figured it would be nice and cool when I went to my brother in laws wedding in NW Ohio near Michigan and Indiana. It was august or sept, I think it was mid 90s and humid. Felt like Alabama or Georgia haha 2 Quote

The difference is that it rarely lasts more than a day and then we get a weather change, whereas down south it lasts for days, weeks, or even months on end. 2 Quote

Super User Choporoz Posted November 10, 2022 Super User Posted November 10, 2022 I've broken skim ice getting my kayak to open water many times. Air temp lower limit is when guides and level wind ice up Quote
Super User DitchPanda Posted November 10, 2022 Super User Posted November 10, 2022 In years past I've fished open water then got back on that exact same spot like 4-5 days later once we got walkable ice. So guess my answer is I don't stop. Although last year I didn't do any ice fishing, mostly due to back issues. Quote

Chilidog Posted November 10, 2022 Posted November 10, 2022 For largemouth bass I had pretty good fishing this fall with water temperatures in the mid to upper 40's. That's about as cold as I have caught largemouth. As far as smallmouth bass I can be successful down to about 40 degree water. As far as the air temperature I can fish into the low 30's without a problem. You just have to dress for it. Quote
The Bassman Posted November 10, 2022 Posted November 10, 2022 I've caught lots of bass by casting onto skim ice then pulling the lure (usually a ned or finesse blade bait) off the edge. For me, upper thirties ambient is about as cold as I care to deal with, especially if there's any wind. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 10, 2022 Global Moderator Posted November 10, 2022 One of my best days in recent memory, we launched the boat into crisp -2 degree air temps. As long as the wind isn't blowing too hard and the water is soft, I'll try it. 5 Quote

Super User WRB Posted November 10, 2022 Super User Posted November 10, 2022 Some bass anglers never stop fishing. If the lake is iced over they simply drill a hole in the ice. The physics of water temperature limits for Black Bass is; LMB,Smallmouth and Spotted, comes down to saturated dissolved oxygen levels must be between 3 to 12 mg/L. Warm water over 90 degrees the mg/L levels fall under 3 without green plants making DO. Cold water less then 39.4 degrees the DO levels increase over 13 and starts to float to the surface and freeze solid at 32 degrees. Those are the physical water limits for bass. Tom 2 Quote
LetMeSeeThatBass Posted November 10, 2022 Posted November 10, 2022 I switch to trout fishing when it gets really cold Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted November 10, 2022 Super User Posted November 10, 2022 Never stop. Transition to night fishing when it starts hitting 90(air) at 10am. 1 Quote

Junk Fisherman Posted November 10, 2022 Posted November 10, 2022 Air temps: I've launched when it was in the high 20s before but I don't know if I would do that nowadays. Mid to upper 30s is a good lower limit for me. Water temps: I'll fish for lakers in Lake Michigan as long as the marinas are ice-free. For bass it is low 40s. Quote
Super User Catt Posted November 10, 2022 Super User Posted November 10, 2022 Water temperatures I don't care, it doesn't get cold enough here to freeze. Air temperatures, 18° & driving sleet, 92° at 2 °clock am. 1 Quote
