Super User ATA Posted November 8, 2022 Super User Posted November 8, 2022 Guys, Somehow lost the keys and I only had one set, The dealer never gave me second set. Not I am stocked at home and need to know what is best option. Dealer or locksmith? Quote
Super User PhishLI Posted November 8, 2022 Super User Posted November 8, 2022 Call your dealer. They'll have the code. 1 Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted November 8, 2022 Super User Posted November 8, 2022 Did the dealer give you a key fob with the keys? There is often a tag attached with the key code for replacement. 1 Quote

Yes, but a good locksmith will be able to get the code from the vehicle. I was surprised to find out how few different ones there are. I was walking down the super market parking lot doing the old guy "where did I park?" thing with the fob, and I opened a different car of the same make and model as mine. I was tempted to try to start it, but I didn't. 1 Quote

Woody B Posted November 9, 2022 Posted November 9, 2022 Assuming it's a fairly new truck, but still uses a "real" key to start it you'll need the key cut code to cut the key, and then it will have to be programmed. Some locksmiths can do this, some can't. All new car dealers for your brand "should" be able to. 1 Quote

Super User flyfisher Posted November 9, 2022 Super User Posted November 9, 2022 A good car locksmith can cut and program the code. I was at a baseball game and came out and my car wouldn't start with the key. Doors opened starter turned. Now this isn't a traditional key but a fob that goes into a slot adn the npush button. Anyways, tow truck guy gave me the number of a guy who came to my house and got me a new fob made. He said just what was said earlier, it is matched to unlock doors and another to start. $300 later i hada. new key and the spare i still keep around in the rare case I lock the keys in the car somehow I have a spare for that at least. 1 Quote

I use the key code on the outside of the truck to open the door so I can't lose my keys. Ford is the only auto maker with that feature because they have a patent on that and it would be very hard for me to go to another vehicle without it now. 1 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 9, 2022 Global Moderator Posted November 9, 2022 Whatever you decide to do, put one of these on your new keychain. No idea how many times this thing has help me find my truck keys. https://www.tile.com/products/deals?utm_campaign=(P:G) (CT:BRAND) (GEO:US) (CA:BRAND) (N:GSN) (AT:KWs) (AU:KWs-broad) tROAS_13870698657&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=632753016214&utm_term=tile key finder-e&adgroup=130386752571&gclsrc=aw.ds&gclid=Cj0KCQiAmaibBhCAARIsAKUlaKSoYdnJiC_2G7U7EnLiFIszybD979GZOLxywT8Bma4d2A7fB5V53ogaAhnVEALw_wcB 1 Quote

The key fob wasn't working so I had to unlock manually. I was starting to get in when I realized it wasn't my car. I was like 'I don't understand", why was I able to unlock someone else's car? 1 Quote

Except that I got into the other person's car and sat there trying the key for easily 60 seconds before I was like "wait, this isn't my junk laying all over the place....." 1 Quote

Didn't some congressman have a similar explanation in the airport bathroom?... "This is not my car, but since I'm here, sup?"... 1 Quote
