Ya, maybe should have had you lip him. 4lb. Smallies don't boat flip well if you don't do it correctly. One St. Croix down. Brian.

P.S. That's not ME, I'm the photo taker.

I don't care how big or small it it...if it's not a panfish, it gets netted.

I flipped a pound+ Crappie a few days, it came free right over the boat and landed on the EVA section of a brand new rod.....took a few nics in the process.

I'm done flipping anything into the boat

Kudos for being an adult and taking responsibility for a mistake rather than bash an equipment manufacturer. Nice fish!

By the time I said "hey don't lift" the rod snapped. Classic high stick, holding the rod almost straight up and lifting. Made an awesome sound. Brian.

do you think a boat flip can hurt a larger fish?  just asking,   i like to net them all just because i have lost so many boatside.

I've boat flipped a few in the past. Just didn't seem like a great idea. Lip or net them all now.

Like most things, If done correctly with the right equipment in the right conditions it can be done safely.

Thought my son was going to break his rod deadlifting a big white bass into the boat Sunday. Really hard to find M/F 6' Daiwa Aird X and he tried to lift a 2+ lb white bass with it. Probably my fault, he'd watched me boat flip a bunch of fish on my spinning rod, but I was doing it like it's supposed to be done instead of deadlifting like he did, and most of my fish were smaller than his too ?

Spinning or Casting?

I've got one of each in 6'6" that are being relegated to 'back up' status....

I agree on taking ownership in your mistake. Either way, you got him in the boat and next time I’m sure you will grab the net. Awesome smallie!!

As far as the responsibility goes, they still may give you a warranty replacement.

When a redfish and I together broke an Omen Green on a reaction high-stick set - both of us over-reacting at the same close-quarters instant -  I called 13Fishing about a discount replacement.  I considered the break my fault, told them so, and knew I didn't want to be without the rod.

They told me Fishing break is warranty and sent me a new rod.

(finished a great trip on my 3-pc back-up rod)

Look at the bright side….time to go rod shopping!!

Use boat flipping to your advantage boys and girls….boat flip, rod breaks, return home to your spouse all bummed out, throw a pity party, get sympathy, buy a more expensive rod!!

Glenn makes this look too easy.

I like catching big kings, (and eating little ones).

Boat flipping fish requires proper technique, and the faster the rod, the higher the modulus, and the more critically designed (lighter, thinner wall) bass sticks leave little room for error.

About 10 years ago I was fishing with an old Daiwa rod from the bank.  I reeled in my jig in and was raising it up out of the water when a big bass hit it about one foot off the bank.  In a knee jerk reaction I just flipped the bass out on the bank, and that rod sure creaked when I did.  That was a learning moment for me, and the last time I flipped a big fish.

Nice catch! Hate to hear about your rod though. Had a similar thought a few weeks back. Doubled up on a magnum deep crank bait with a pair of big spotted bass. Lost the crank, the fish, and didn’t get a pic. Guess we all do it sometimes…

one of my favorite online personalities will occasionally boat flip a bass.  I grimace when the fish is slammed against things like the kayak or (worse) his pedals on his kayak.   I personally cannot control a squirming fish.
