it's unfortunate: my dog is afraid of fishing rods

so odd.  and funny.

I carry rods into the house all the time to rig and respool.  every time my dog (HANK) heads for his hiding spots.  gone!  

we adopted him and despite the fact that I have never spanked him EVER ( I rarely raise my voice) , I believe his last owner may have used "tools" to beat him.  I can't swat at fly without him running away.  I roll up a magazine and my dog is gone.

 

fishing rods.  If I lean them against the couch he is fine.  I pick one up.  gone!!

 

poor Hank.  no big deal, since he comes out after I am done and acts normal, but it is sad he is hiding somewhere waiting for the foot to drop.

 

my hobby should be tennis because he loves a tennis ball..but the racket might scare him   I would buy a Hobie ProAngler 14 to bring him fishing, but he would jump overboard if I picked up a fishing rod.  hahahahaha

Yep.  That is a classic sign of physical punishment.  That dog has developed a bad association with those types of objects and has learned to avoid them.

Our dogs are scared of anything big that you carry except a sack of dog food

My oldest dog has always been terrified of fishing rods. I started calling them “death sticks”.
 

She’s come along way over the years. When I adopted her she was scared of many things. A few of those fears have persisted over the years. I can’t stomach the thought of her being abused by whatever owner she was born into. She’ll be 13 this month and I adopted her when she was a little over a year.

Concur. This is part of what you live with getting rescue animals.

 

I took Roger with me fishing one day shortly after we got him, and he was absolutely terrified of the sound of the rod when I made a cast. I think we stayed for about 5 minutes before I packed him and all my stuff up. He sat in the passenger seat of my car shivering with his ears laid back the whole ride home.

 

Lily cowers when we pick up almost anything.

 

I'm mad as hell all over again thinking about it. I'd very much like to have a private chat with their former owners.

I didn't mean to fire up those emotions.  Anyone that physically abuses a dog is scum.  I hope your dog is doing well.

As unfortunate as it seems, guess it’s better than him having a “taste” for your rods. That could get expensive quick!

You're good, bro. It was a brief flash. I went and wrestled with the pups, and we were over it by the time I got around to giving them noogies.

 

Iand you're right. Those people are scum, and I hope that they're victimized much more harshly every day, for the rest of their worthless lives.

Our rescue dog Lola is scared to death of them too. Our other rescue dog Hank, he couldn’t care less about them.

Maybe not a bad thing. I was fishing with a friend once with hot dogs for catfish when one of his dogs ate a piece of hot dog with a hook in it and had to go to the emergency vet that night. Our dog is a Morkie, half Yorkie, half Maltese. She's 11 years old and less than 6 lbs. She's afraid of everything. We had a cat take up on 9/11 as a kitten that has grown to 8.2 lbs. He wants so badly to play with the dog but he's too rough.

My wife insisted we adopt our girl “Beauty”, for almost a full year she wouldn’t come near me and pretty much hid under our bed when I came home. Now she runs to me as soon as she hears the garage door open when I come home and she’s on me like white on rice after 2 hours on the weekend so we can take our daily walks ? P.S. Were going on 6 years with her and 4 years with her brother from another mother “Steve”.
