Super User Mobasser Posted November 2, 2022 Super User Posted November 2, 2022 I started years ago with only bait casting reels for bass fishing. I picked up my first spinning reel I think around 25 yrs ago. Ive used both casting and spinning since I bought my first spinning outfit. The past few seasons, I've fished a very clear lake. My spinning gear handles the lighter line and smaller baits, which work well on this lake. So, my percentage has become around 70% spinning, and 30% casting on most trips. What percentage of your fishing time is spent using spinning or casting tackle? 1 Quote
Super User Solution gim Posted November 2, 2022 Super User Solution Posted November 2, 2022 I'm probably 60% casting and 40% spinning. I prefer a BC simply for the power, control, and accuracy but there are definitely situations and presentations that are better suited for a spinning setup, and you've found one of those. Limiting yourself to only one all the time is like limiting the number of tools in a toolbox. Certain tools just work better for certain projects. 2 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted November 2, 2022 Global Moderator Posted November 2, 2022 Depends on which lure the fish are biting. Spinning for light stuff baitcaster for heavier stuff 8 Quote
Super User AlabamaSpothunter Posted November 2, 2022 Super User Posted November 2, 2022 My observation has been the further north you go, the more spinning reel usage ticks up in regards to Bass fishing. A spinning reel is arguably the more used tool for targeting smallies, whereas easily baitcast gear is used to target big LGM. I'm 80% baitcasting, 20% spinning reel. If I'm fishing for big LGM, the spinning gear is up full time. 4 Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted November 2, 2022 Super User Posted November 2, 2022 I’m probably 75/25 casting to spinning. Casting rigs are usually more efficient and better suited than spinning to my fishing situations. 1 Quote
Hulkster Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 90% casting, 10% spinning. Spinning only when I'm throwing really light stuff 1 Quote

Super User MN Fisher Posted November 2, 2022 Super User Posted November 2, 2022 I'd say 60%-80% casting and 20%-40% spinning depending on the day and what techniques I decide on. 2 Quote
Super User WRB Posted November 2, 2022 Super User Posted November 2, 2022 Trying to remember when I started using spinning reels? I remember my 1st spinning reel was a Mitchell 308 for trout fishing when back packing in the early 60’ or late 50’s. In the late 60’s bought a Zebco Cardinal 4 to use bass fishing with live bait like big crawlers and small crawdads fly lined. Next was Daiwa TD SS1500 in the early 90’s to replace the Cardinal, the spinning rods were Fenwick until discovering Phenix rods via Iovino, still use one of them. The pass 25 years Shimano Stradic and now Vanford 2500 w/Victory rod. Spinning to me is light line finesse fishing period, something to catch a few on. Prefer baitcasting whenever on the water. Some times it’s 100% casting, tough days it’s 90% spinning, always make a few casts with my jig rod to keep them honest. Tom 2 Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted November 2, 2022 Super User Posted November 2, 2022 100% casting but that's what fits my fishing style and how I grew up fishing, I wouldn't recommend it for everyone. 3 Quote
Southernbasser Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 Personally, I like to finesse fish more than power fish. Therefore, I use my spinning setup more. However, I do use a bait caster when I power fish. It’s probably a 85% spinning, and 15% bait caster split. 2 Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted November 2, 2022 Super User Posted November 2, 2022 spinning is for the dark, and then only where you can't see your long cast splash. (ok, there are a few complex finesse rigs - tandems and weightless cigar cork rigs - where I prefer spinning) Major deja-vu on this thread. 2 Quote
padlin Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 Being new to a BC, maybe 50/50. Been starting out with the BC the last few outings until I get a knot that I can't get out, at which time I change to the MH backup spinning setup. I also use a ML spinning setup for light baits, which I use quite a bit. 1 Quote
Super User Tennessee Boy Posted November 2, 2022 Super User Posted November 2, 2022 I’m pretty close to 50/50. It varies by time of year and what lake I’m fishing. 3 Quote
Super User bowhunter63 Posted November 2, 2022 Super User Posted November 2, 2022 I would say 50 50 1 Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted November 2, 2022 Super User Posted November 2, 2022 Bass fishing, I'm probably 65%-35% BC to spinning, fresh water overall probably closer to 50/50, In the salt, I'm mostly conventional, with spinning reserved for certain niches. 1 Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted November 2, 2022 Super User Posted November 2, 2022 Finesse = spinning tackle Power = baitcasting gear 3 Quote
Captain Phil Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 Currently, I'm about 95% casting and 5% spinning. I prefer catching larger bass, so the lures and techniques I use work better with casting tackle. Back when I was fishing tournaments, it was more like 50/50. In those days, few tournament competitors used spinning tackle which gave me an advantage There are things you can do with light line on a spinning rod that you can't with 20 on a casting outfit. 3 Quote
Super User T-Billy Posted November 2, 2022 Super User Posted November 2, 2022 Since getting turned on to BFS gear by you minions of the Bait Monkey here at BR, spinning is for crappie fishing. 1 2 Quote
Woody B Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 100% casting. I fish 99% stained water. I can easily cast lures down to 1/8 ounce. Spinning equipment just doesn't feel "right" to me. 3 Quote
crypt Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 99% casting......you can do the math............... Quote
