Fun diversion fact: Years ago one of the other senior managers at a hotel I worked for went on sabbatical for a a year just when I needed a new place to live, so I watched his house for a year. Well, he and his father were friends with a very famous news anchor.

 

One day I picked up the phone and heard, "This is Walter Cronkite."

 

He delivered it in the same tone and cadence that he did on the news. It was classic.

 

Now back to the topic of how data that social media and how it manipulates your life if you aren't aware of it...

The extent of my social media is BR and a couple of trade forums. I've been banned from most of the rest and have no desire to get on FB or Twitter or the likes. I'm not dependent on social media for monetary or emotional fulfillment.   

That being said, I have received compensation peddling on trade forums and an "Atta boy!" occasionally on a fishing forum. I can live with that.

Don't do FB, don't read a newspaper, don't watch TV other than a football game and don't own a computer......I like it that way.

I don't know, long before the InterWeb, The Onion, Alex Jones, Perfect pillows, and non-binary gender identification, folks would be exposed to all sorts of charlatans, snake oil salesmen, and false prophets of all types, and (even those with little formal education) were able to determine what's what. What's the use of our species having such an advanced brain, if we aren't going to use it. There is ample good news sources out there, but it's easier to take in (or shun) the shinny items waved in our faces. Dumb!

Living in a bedroom community to Washington, DC and having worked for a Federal Agency for 34 years, I am literally swimming in politics and have been for the last 30 years we have lived in this area.  What I have learned is that there are -0- news and media outlets that don’t have a political leaning and yes that very much includes NPR and any other taxpayer funded news outlet.  Now that I’m retired, I have the time to watch hearings and press briefings live and can hear first hand what the news outlets will spin up later and it amazes me how the story/information is portrayed depending on the political perspective.  If I had to guess 75% or more of the public rely on these news sources for their information and very, very few understand the spin factor.  Most political social media is just depressing because it exposes the underbelly of and ignorance of a lot of people.  I understand there’s a lot of bots and pot stirrers but I prefer to stay a long way away from political issues.

note his girlfriend and living condition (a school bus). You just can't make this stuff up, it's silly.

Just have to apply for professional membership. There's a  link on the site, you submit your professional credentials. It takes a couple weeks to get approval.

Dah, not a thing, except to have certain types live a in delusion where they think they're the betters of others, then attempt to brow beat them into submission. Weak people who get a hold of power often behave horribly with it, and much of this social media junk has empowered a ton of them to be their worst selves. Meanwhile, they don't have an original thought in their heads, have never really read history, but think every crackpot-of-the week idea is a good one. But this is old news. If a murderous authoritarian despot can be transformed into Good ole Uncle Joe in the early 40s with not much more than am radio, then anything's possible now.

I agree. I don't really see this place and my other hobby forum as social media, but more like an elective club meeting, and it sticks to the point which is just how I like it. I'm extremely disinterested about what might be in someone's head other than the topic of this hobby.

Who's truth? And as @A-Jay has alluded to, if you get the unvarnished truth, then what? What do you do with it? Wind yourself up? Pop a sticker on your bumper? Get an ulcer? Un-friend your second cousin? What? You can only hope for the best and do your best, and in the limited capacity you have for actually doing anything at all.

 

My purpose now is to make our house as magical a place for my granddaughters as my grandparent's house was for me. Firm, but full of love. Oh, and keep the lights on and go fishing, but most everything else is just white noise, or it might as well be. Sounds like you're doing the same for your grandson, and good for you.

I've followed this thread. I tend to agree with A-Jay. We can take in what news is handed to us, and make our own opinions. This is really all we can do. Knowing this, it's easy to see why so many folks have become sceptical.  If my dad were still alive, I think he would be saddened by how things have become.

Back in my day (old man yelling at cloud) we didn't have bike helmets, but some kids thought it was cool to wear a motorcycle helmet while riding their bike.

 

True story - back in the day of old style bikes with sissy bars, banana seats, and brakes you stomped on I wrecked when I ran into another kid in a race going down a big hill. I flew over the handlebars and landed in the road.

 

I was about a mile from home and my bike wheel was bent up so I had to push it home. I was halfway home and my buddy and I were regaling about our cool wreck when one of our neighbors stopped me, pointed at my arm and asked what happened. I didn't realize I had ripped open my forearm / elbow area just about down to the bone and it was all blood and asphalt. at THAT moment it started to hurt and I nearly passed out.

 

Good times.

LOL. Back in elementary school days we would play stickball and touch football in an empty lot in the neighborhood, and then one spring they started building new houses on it, there was a cinder block foundation, and someone had laid a 6x2 (or maybe an 8x2) across a part of it, so we started riding our bikes across it, on the 3rd time through my front wheel went off it and I landed on my thigh right on the board. My entire left quad looked like one big black and blue for weeks, hurt like a mother too.
