Preparing for a trip this weekend and plan to throw an a-rig for the first time. What brand/style/size jig heads would you recommend? I plan to throw 3" grubs and 2.8"- 3.3" keitechs.

Been looking for a quality jig head at a fair price. The strike king squadron/ baby squadron heads seems to look like they could fit the bill. Alternatively the plain ol gamakatsu ball head jigs look like they could work.

What do you think?

For baits that small/short I REALLY like the Dobyns Light Hook Swimbait Heads

Stand alone and on A-Rigs - Just need to match the tackle to the hook.

The Boxer head and the Flat Shad jig head by VMC are also both very decent.

I'm gonna yield to A-Jay as I was only asking for advice on these a month ago or so.

I bought the Strike King baby Squadron swimbait heads in 1/8th for my Picasso mini bait ball rig.   The hooks are super sticky sharp.   Not nearly as detailed as the high end stuff, but for the price you're getting a fantastic hook and a jighead designed to be used on A Rigs.

I make my own.  I use a ball head in 1/16 and 1/8 depending on how deep I plan to fish it.

I just go in one of my salt water boxes, and grab a couple in the right size for whatever trailers I'm loading it with. Around here, you can only (legally) use 2 hooks, so I attach the others with a twist lock or a snap. Even when I use a full spread with hooks, I usually run everything up from center with plain hooks. That's assuming I would actually ever cast an umbrella of course...

Z-man trout head 2/0 will fit 3.3 size baits really well, and it has a big eye on it. I prefer gold eyes. IMO the eye makes a difference especially in clearer water where I'm fishing more natural shad colors vs a straight white. The hook is really stout for a 2/0 - I haven't had any bend out even a little bit.

I'm trying some other things like the dirty jigs and the 6th sense (gluing eyes on these).

I have a hunch that at the end of fiddling, I'll find that it doesn't really matter that much except for eye or no eye.

ps: 2.8 seems really really small for a full-size a-rig. Not saying they won't work, but may get overwhelmed by the blades. Let us know what you find out!

Just a 1/8 oz. ball head. I like a light wire hook so I can straighten the thing when it gets stuck.

I really like the Lunker City Pro Lite Round Jig Head. Light hooks that are still plenty strong. Great hook keeper. Fairly inexpensive considering you get 5 to a pack. I would also recommend the Storm Largo Shad in place of the Keitechs. I love Keitechs, but just hate how quickly they get torn up and considering as many as you are using on a A Rig, I like more durability. I suggest the 3/0 jig head with the 3” Largo Shad.

For smaller swimbaits I use Eagle Claw crappie jigs with the "Pro V" bend. The shanks seem longer than standard crappie jigs and fit nicely on smaller swimbaits and help keep the weight down if that is a concern.
