But I've thrown back many I caught bass fishing just because I was too lazy to clean them.

Ya - where it's allowed. Can't use that rig in MN and spider rigs from a boat are also illegal.

Check your state's regulations.

The first thing I would do is to make sure the lake you are fishing has a good crappie population.  A lot of the pressured lakes around me have a very low population due to over fishing.

If the body of water is pressured I'm definitely throwing shiners.

Goes without saying. I know mine. It's a very common practice here. And I fish a private reservoir most of the time anyway. I could take 100 fish if I wanted to. I hardly want to take any though.

I feel like a little dropshot could work?

Funny you mention it, I caught this one last weekend on a dropshot with a Yamamoto Shad Shape Worm.  Not a normal catch and not the target species but it was a biggun.?

I went fishing with an older gentleman who is a crappie angler, and I mean only crappie! He had Livescope and we were targeting crappie with drop shots. Worked like a charm and I had experience with them so we had a good day. Many crappie came home with me that day and if I ever fish vertically with sonar again, I'll use a drop shot to get down to them.
