I’ve had a 7’0” MHF Johnny Morris Patriot for a while and still haven’t figured out what is best to throw on it. Have had it paired with a Curado MGL 6.2:1 for lipless cranks and squarebills but I still haven’t caught a fish on it yet. It barely gets used because I don’t know what to throw with it really. It has a really soft tip that gets into a nice backbone about 1/3 the way down. I’d call it a fast action but a pretty whippy fast. I’d also say it leans more medium than medium heavy.

What lures would work well with a rod like this? It’s crazy light and feels really comfortable in hand. I’m sure I’d love it if I knew what to use with it.

Why not try a wacky rig? With seems like a sensitive tip would detect the strike with a strong backbone to set the hook. Might work pretty well...

I'd probably try throwing some topwater on it, but it sounds like it could handle plenty of techniques well.

The best way to find out what is the rod's forte is to try a ton of different lures on it.  Not everyone likes the same action rod for a specific lure.  Just ask what is the favorite action for spinnerbaits.  :D

As you are already discovering, you have to decide what action works best for you with different lures.

I think dodgeguy has experience with that line of rods.  Maybe he will chime in.

I like rods in that range for spinnerbaits and treble hook topwaters.

I've got a similar rod that I throw most of my presentations on; Topwater, spinnerbaits, swim jigs, Texas rigs, lipless cranks, 1/4-1/2ish jigs.

I haven't thrown these on it but it would probably be good for chatterbaits and heavier shakey heads (1/4oz+).

I'd toss most every lure category with it . Just find out what weight it handles the best and stick to it .

It sounds like you're using it for something it should be good for with lipless cranks. I'd try it with walking topwaters also.

Thanks everyone, I’ll try throwing topwaters with it first and experiment with other things ?

If the rod doesn’t feel right to you why keep it and waste fishing  time trying to find a lure to use?
