You remember as kids those cool survival knives at the flea market ? I bet @TnRiver46 had one too. Anyway there was always mono fishing line and hooks. I was thinking if we found ourselves having to live for days or even weeks the easiest way to put food in out stomachs could be around creeks or streams which are always filled with life.

I tried to put together the smallest possible way to catch small stream fish using straws.
I have 30’ of 15# braid (Yozuri ?) 4 little flies which look like size 18 or less hook size and resemble mosquito, ant or gnats. I also played with Gulp and got 4 red worms in a straw and I dried some corn with heavy salt (takes about 20 mins to hydrate and go on smallest hook.

What would you guys add to the straw set? What a about a tic tac container size kit? Or even an altoids tin? The kit has to be small enough so that it is something you would carry without burden on every hike or hunting trip or for just a walk in the woods.

Any ideas on catching anything to eat around water I would like to hear!!

Beetle spin adds almost no weight or size to a fishing kit, and catches about everything. Was thinking a mepps (inline spinner) but it's kind of snaggy fishing it off of some random pole one cut from a tree.

I like your straw idea!

On my bucket list is to catch a fish with gorge. Probably pretty inefficient but seems like a good challenge.

I remember reading it is more energy efficient to trap fish to eat than to try to catch them.

either way, I am dead meat.

Just kidding.  my plan is a .22 with subsonic ammo and head shots on my local goose and turkey population.

I’d go with a scatter gun for birds. A heavy shell too, goose and turkey are a lot tougher than you think

If you’re around a stream bottom there will always be worms, grubs, and other natural bait. A 10’ length of 30# braid and a couple #8 hooks would be plenty. A couple split shot for good measure. Pick a limber branch and you can catch fish. Use an overhanging branch and leave a set line while you go do something else essential.

Seems like I’ve been stuck many times where I was unable to dig up any worms or grubs

Yea here where I live the ground can be froze but streams still moving and bugs for bait be nearly non existent. I figured the rehydrated corn may get a nibble from minnows or suckers?

True. But in a hypothetical “end of days” scenario;  a subsonic .22 won’t draw attention to the..hmm. Zombies. Let’s go with zombies. :)  It’s so much quieter.

I cannot confirm or deny it; but a .22LR to the head will poleax a goose.

I have a small tack box and telescopic spinning rig in my emergency bag. The tackle box just has some hooks and spools of line, and a few inline spinners.
