Got my blood/urine sample took, and the results say I am in the high zone for total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol.

Girl from the Dr office told me the Doc said to don’t eat fried food, taters, white bread, sweets.  And get more exercise to lose weight.

Good grief. That’s like 75% of my diet.

I also have HBP, but the BP perscription is helping that.

For now , I’m reducing portions.  Trying to get out and walk every day, but it’s cutting into my fishing time…

What are y’alls experiences with it?

My total cholesterol hovers between 190 and 195 - Doc just gives me dirty looks cause she knows how 'bad' my diet is.

My BP last time I was in (last Thursday) was 106/68...which is about my normal - I don't think I got a problem.

Sorry to hear you're having a hard times with this stuff.

Fried food, taters, white bread, sweets, get more exercise, lose weight & HBP.

Good grief. Doesn't sound too good.

As for experiences with it ?

I can't really help you there, my numbers all fall in the 'poster child' category.

But I work at it.

Good Luck.

Mine is 247 total , and 178 ldl.

I know once before , like 20 years ago, it was 260 total. The doc never made a big deal out of it until now. I generally eat better than I used to.  I eat a lot of salad now  , despite my other food choices.

Mine is hereditary too- my mom had it for years and lived to 96.

My wife’s family has a long history of high BP and cholesterol. She was put on BP meds shortly after having our son. She started exercising and got off the BP meds. Then a couple years ago she was put on cholesterol meds. She changed her diet and started exercising and she’s now on the lowest amount.

That’s encouraging. I’m glad she’s better.

My experience is that my doctor didn’t make a big enough deal out of it to get me to change.  My vertebral arteries clogged up and I had a stroke.  I wound up in a rehab hospital undergoing therapy learning how to speak and walk properly.

My right one is 100% clogged and the left one is 70%.

I now have a twice daily regimen of meds to keep my blood pressure and cholesterol under control and blood thinners to help prevent another stroke.

It isn’t something to take lightly.

I totally agree…. I had my stroke in February this year.

I was forced to change my diet due to some other health concerns. Honestly, it's one of the best things I've ever done. Unfortunately the dietary changes didn't totally remedy my situation, but it's helped mitigate my symptoms a lot and I know my body appreciates the better food.

Eating well is like any other habit, it gets easier with time. I haven't had ice-cream, pizza, brownies, etc. in like 3 years. Believe me, it gets easier. The hardest thing to do is "only have a little." You have to go all in (or "all out" technically). Foods can be addictive, so cold turkey is a better idea than trying moderation. For me at least.

I've found healthy foods that I love:

- wild game meat (grilled)

- fish (grilled)

- sweet potatoes

- rice-based pastas and such

- oatmeal (see the recent thread)

- I've even learned to love veggies like brussel sprouts, artichoke hearts, broccoli, etc. Put them on a cookie sheet, drizzle them with just a little olive oil and sea salt, and bake until they crisp. It's genuinely delicious.

Basically you just have to lie to yourself (at first) and say, "I like this." After a while you will. Before long you'll start judging people who still eat garbage... and then you'll know you've arrived haha.

Last year my cholesterol was borderline, so the doc put my on medicine.  The next time I had it checked it had gone down 60 points.

The problem with my blood pressure is that I always have my check up right after getting off of work.

The highest it ever was was 200/160.  He checked it several more times during the check up and it went down each time.  My new Dr. wanted me to change diet, get more exercise, and if possible get a different job because the high BP appears to be stress related.  I told her I was too old to do that, so on the BP meds I went.

I'm on Losartan for BP. Last time I had blood work they said, if I recall, cholesterol was106 and they said it was borderline high. I must be healthy compared to the rest of you LOL

I am on Losartan for BP and Lovastatin for cholesterol. Been on both of them for quite a few years. So far everything seems to be okay. I go in once every six months for blood work. The doctor will make any changes to my meds then if need be.

I’m on Hydro something for BP , but it’s been running low. My wife made fried chicken tonight for all of us and all I had was a tiny piece. My stomach is growling as I write this. I had 2 big bowls of Homemade vegetable soup at a friend’s house earlier, I am still  hungry tonite but not gonna eat anything else.

This is kind of hard.  ? I’ve had a big appetite all my life!!

We get a discount on health insurance for doing a biometric screening once a year.  I don't remember my individual numbers but my total cholesterol is 150.  My blood pressure was 110/70.  My fasting blood glucose level was 79.    I'm 20 pounds overweight, I don't eat right, but I'm very active.  Both of my parents and 3 of my Grandparents had type 2 diabetes.   All except my Mom had high blood pressure and high cholesterol.   40 years ago a retired Dr told me to take a shot of unfiltered apple cider vinegar every day.  He said it would help all this stuff.  I don't know if that's why my numbers are good but I still do it every day.  (it's like taking a drink of fire)

Pretty crazy what they put into our food now. My grandmothers strategy was eat everything and as much as possible, and she was very skinny! Two generations ago, a lot of us were always hungry and not always sure we would have enough. Now the food is so gobbed up with things that increase profit margins, we can’t get it all out of our system

I used to drink a daily small cup of the AC vinegar  with some honey. It seemed to help the blood pressure symptoms at first, but then didn’t seem to work anymore.

It wont hurt anything, so I think I’ll start that back up again and see if it helps.

Thanks!

My moms first move cooking wise  was the crisco, haha. I think she told me when she was young in North Carolina they used bear grease . She said bear meat was good tasting but tough.

I agree man, no telling what alls in the store bought food. I know there’s a lot of salt, bad fat and whatnot.

Its hard to find something to eat that’s not bad for me in some way.?

I don’t know jack about cholesterol but it seems like chicken and rice or steak and broccoli is a good way to go. Just plain old meat appears to be your best friend if trying to go healthy, everything else is full of hidden goop

My skinny grandma that lived thru the depression cooked everything in lard, she lived to be almost 90. Her husband lived to be 80 and built atom bombs, sometimes you just gotta be lucky

ive also had dad and grandpa not so lucky, both died young. One of cancer once of a coal train. I say just do the best you can, no matter how smart we think we are, stuff happens.

You’ll be shocked how your health problems will improve if you’ll walk and get exercise! It’s like a miracle if you’ll stay faithful to regular steady exercise, you could probably still eat as your accustomed to with steady daily walking. Start a 10-15 min light dumb bell workout 2-3 days a week would be a good idea too.

Perhaps start with plain whole/real food.

Nothing processed.

Cook it yourself.

Bake, boil, grill or broil, don't fry.

You can do this and you should because it makes a difference.

Agree with the food choices. Meat and fresh veggies/fruits. If it comes in a box or a jar, there's something in it that will kill you

My Ex of 110lb had Cholesterol and I 200lb at the time was normal. One of her No No was Eggs since she didnt eat fried food at all(she was doing steam veggie and fish or chicken only), I in other hand eat everything. So I think not eating eggs can help you a lot. Wish you the best and healthy.

My dad's mother lived to be 102 and she was not thin. Every time we went to grandmas house she fed us baked chicken, mashed potato's and a vegetable. For all I know, she could have ate baked chicken, mashed potato's and a vegetable, every day of her life.

Eat food as close to the form it grew in. Lean meat and vegetables, and cheese should not be a ‘sauce’. We’re not all going to look like @A-Jay but we can at least we can give our circulatory systems a break.
