farmpond1 Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 I'm really not complaining because I love my flasher (for ice fishing) but can anyone explain why flashers cost so much? Unless I'm missing something, the technology is about the oldest in the business (compared to graphs, etc) and yet I've never seen a unit much below 300 dollars. And most are considerably more. Any ideas? Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted November 16, 2010 Super User Posted November 16, 2010 For one, supply and demand. So few people use them now, it cost a whole lot more to manufactor them. You figure a company tools up to make a new LCD unit to sell 100,000. They spend the same amount tooling up to make a flasher to sell 10,000. Guess which one is going to cost a whole lot more. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted November 17, 2010 Super User Posted November 17, 2010 Are the flashers being built today even flashers in the traditional sense? I though these were basically LED or LCD units that merely acted like the flashers of old. BTW, you can occasionally find an old Lowrance or Hummingbird flasher on Ebay or Craigslist for very reasonable. Whether it works or not and finding accessories like cables and transducers is another matter. Quote

Yeah, I kind've figured it had more to do with number they make (and sell) then the technology. But there are things about my flasher which are advantageous over a graph so, for ice fishing anyway, it's worth it. Quote

I don't know how different they are-although I imagine there are some big advantages to the new ones over the old (better visibility, sensitivity and zooming). Apart from how the image is displayed, they actually may have more in common with a graph than the old flashers. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted November 17, 2010 Super User Posted November 17, 2010 Indecent exposure (flashing) could land you state time. Pretty hefty price. ;D Quote
