Drawdown Posted October 17, 2022 Posted October 17, 2022 I can see the logic behind a 3/4oz single-blade Colorado in the early springtime, especially on my home water—it is almost constantly muddy on the eastern part of the Tennessee River that time of year, and the extra water disruption should pay dividends. But what reason would you throw anything heavier than a 1/2oz double willow (or willow + Colorado, tandem for that matter) other than the lure rating of the rod? I am legitimately wondering this. 2 Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted October 17, 2022 Super User Posted October 17, 2022 I’ve started throwing 3/4oz Spinnerbaits this year more than any other weight. The primary reason for it is this; by far my most successful technique with Spinnerbaits is slow rolling a double willow on the bottom, and ripping them through the grass. It’s much easier to keep the bait along the bottom with 3/4oz, as well as come through the weeds. If im fishing shallower water with less vegetation, I’ll use 3/8-1/2oz, but most of my Spinnerbait fishing is in situations where a 3/4oz is most efficient. 5 Quote

Including my PB Smallie. https://youtu.be/frJAlndpO7E https://youtu.be/NpVmd8ll1Dg?t=168 https://youtu.be/Z95g3H4qmp0?t=84 Fish Hard A-Jay 7 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 17, 2022 Global Moderator Posted October 17, 2022 @A-Jay nailed one of my main reasons, burning baits for smallmouths. The other is to add big trailers for largemouth and still keep the bait down and balanced. That's the size I use at LOZ with a 4-5 inch paddletail in the fall to run along dock edges. 4 Quote
Super User king fisher Posted October 17, 2022 Super User Posted October 17, 2022 To get deeper, and catch giant bass. My PB was caught on a 3/4 oz double willow spinnerbait. The bass was in 30 feet of water, suspended 15 feet deep, holding tight to large tree branches in flooded timber. The heavy bait allowed me to get down to the fish and deflect off of the branches. The weight also enabled me make long casts in strong wind. I use 3/4 oz spinnerbaits more than any other size. 6 Quote

Oh they work, just not when I use them. I’ve tried FOREVER I passed the definition of insanity point in 1996, still throwing them unsuccessfully 1 Quote

Unless you are wearing an ankle bracelet, there is no law against dipping you toe in a new pond. You may be surprised how much difference a change of location can make. If you come to my neck of the woods and shut the spinnerbait bite down, don't stay long your life may be in danger. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 17, 2022 Super User Posted October 17, 2022 Run deeper or use 6 to 7 size big blades where golden shiners or larger bait fish are present. The last B.A.S.S. tournament Rick Clunn won in Florida he used 3/4 oz spinnerbait with big blades for the win. Tom 4 Quote

BassCats Posted November 13, 2022 Posted November 13, 2022 Miss the days when Steve Parks would post his fishing reports on here. Was always fascinating. Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted November 13, 2022 Super User Posted November 13, 2022 Fishing deeper and/or wanting a bigger profile, at some point as you upsize the blade(s) the SB will get unbalanced if the head is too light, particularly if fishing it faster, or big pike. 1 Quote

Super User scaleface Posted November 14, 2022 Super User Posted November 14, 2022 I use whatever weight I cast the best . 3/4 oz is a little to heavy for the 7 foot mh rod I use . A heavier or longer rod may chuck 3/4 oz best . Quote

I'll sure be trying this, seems like it would work good in my local rivers. Thanks for the idea!! 1 Quote
