Zcoker Posted October 26, 2022 Posted October 26, 2022 Here in south Florida during the covid epidemic, some of our so called chief meteorologist would setup a big flat screen outside of their mega homes on the intracoastal waterway for their daily forecast, showing not only the weather but also showing off their big homes and grand living styles. I mean, wouldn't it be just fantastic to have a super high paying job where all you have to do is dress up and then take pop- shots at everything, guessing at everything, even if it mistakes are made, absolutely no repercussions whatsoever, wouldn't that be just grand! Almost sounds like a politician lol Granted, some of them try hard to make their forecast or guess as accurate as possible. For the most, the online weather apps seem to offer better outcomes, imho. 1 1 Quote
Captain Phil Posted October 26, 2022 Posted October 26, 2022 Meteorologists should be rated for accuracy. I'm fairly sure my dog could get it right 50% of the time and he thinks the "cone of uncertainty" is the thing the vet puts on his head. A 24 hour TV weather channel is ridiculous. The craziest thing is when they started naming winter storms. News flash, "snow storm Bruce is heading toward Chicago!" Seriously? They start naming hurricanes when they are 1,000 miles away. When one hits, they all stand in the wind for the money shot. When it's over, they send their camera crews down to do interviews. So Mrs. Smith, how do you feel since you lost everything you own? Well Jim, to tell you the truth it feels like crap. Cut to a commercial... 2 Quote
Super User gim Posted October 26, 2022 Super User Posted October 26, 2022 There is a retired weatherman from CBS named Paul Douglas that has a huge house at Bearpath here. Bearpath is a private exclusive gated community in Eden Prairie with a golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus. I've caddied and played there. Its the nicest golf course I've ever played at in my life. Anyways, he has a house on the 17th hole near the green. You can easily tell which house is his, as he has all kinds of instruments on the roof. He was one of pioneers of doppler radar and made a boat load of money off that patent. Of course now every weather app or model uses doppler radar. I'm in the wrong business. Quote

He's out there all hunched and hunkered in the middle of 100mph winds talking about how windy it is--duh--while all over people's homes are being totally demolished. They have nothing to go back to. He probably has a helicopter to take him back to his fortress. That kinda sensationalism just doesn't sit right with me. Pretty dangerous, if you ask me. Nice message to send out to everyone. Let's all go stand near in the eyewall of a cat 4 hurricane! Quote

It seems the only time that station gets excited is when there's a hurricane on the map. Their ratings must be pretty low most of the time? I hate it when they keep showing the same downed tree when there's nothing else to show. Warning people of the dangers is a good idea. Panicking them in not. Quote

It almost appears like these weathermen are doing it for fun, for the fun of it all, or for sensationalism, or even for ratings. Everything related to safety is literally blown out the door. Some innocent viewer may come along and think it's "ok" to do this very thing and get killed in the process! Quote
