Super User A-Jay Posted November 17, 2022 Super User Posted November 17, 2022 Heavy snowfall is expected today and tonight across parts of northern Michigan where localized amounts of 12" or more will be possible right on A-Jay's house by Friday AM. Intense snowfall rates of 1-2” per hour or higher will lead to quick accumulations on roadways and near-zero visibilities at times, resulting in dangerous driving conditions. A-Jay 1 1 Quote
Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted November 17, 2022 Global Moderator Posted November 17, 2022 We’re on the very northern edge of the 12” accumulation prediction here. Our snowfall amount is through Saturday night though. Hopefully we end up with a third of that. @A-Jay at least we’re not in Buffalo, NY 3-4’ predicted. ? 1 Quote

We want the snow - Makes the dog sledding better. Also we almost always get more than "Predicted" I did see that Buffalo NY snow forecast. First one I read said SIX FEET . . . . . That's a little much . . . . Especially all at once. But those folks have been getting dumped on for a long time. So they know the deal. The pictures are always pretty wild too. A-Jay Quote

volzfan59 Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 I'm going to freely admit that I was only half paying attention to the weather this morning on TV, feel free to correct me if I misunderstood. They were reporting that upstate New York is going to get six feet of snow from a storm starting this evening! Six feet from one storm? I realize that the front can stall out, but six feet! Said that if it happens, it will break the all time snowfall record from one front. Winter before last, where I live in south Arkansas, we got six inches and it paralyzed the county. Heck, our mail didn't run for a week and I'm not saying that to be funny. Our mail wasn't delivered for a week. Our little town doesn't have plows, salt trucks, etc. They call it "snowmegedon". Six feet would wipe us out. I'm from east TN where we got snow, so we got around just fine. Of course everything was closed so there was no need to get around. I'm going to be praying for you folks up there. Quote

Lakes Erie and Ontario produce a lot of 'lake effect' snow. As the front moves across the lakes it picks up a LOT of moisture, then dumps it on western and upstate NY. 4 Quote

Only problem was it didn’t hardly snow so we just slid around on salt depreciated our vehicles. Leave it to the govt 2 1 Quote

Since 2007 we've been living in an area of northern lower MI that is affectionately known as "The Snow Belt". I grew up just out side of Boston, MA and before coming here I 'thought' I knew what snow was. Well, this place is next level. The average is usually 140 inches a winter. So from Nov to Apr it will snow just about an inch a day, everyday. It's a grey sky just about all winter here and is like living in a Snow Globe. #shakeitup. Getting 4-5 inches 3 or 4 days in a row is routine and adds up fast. But the most intense thing is when it's coming down at 2 inch or more an hour. Never seen ANYTHING like it until I came here. It's surreal. Seems so quite & beautiful but it's just dumping and dumping. Flakes are huge. I will often just go out and stand in it. As a result, this is a huge winter sports area and has been for a long time. Snowmobiles are allowed to drive on the roads and are often the only way to get around. Something I had to get used to when I first got up here and I am. But it's still makes me smile seeing 20 of them at a gas station. Snow machine trails are EVERY where here and the county is constantly grooming them. When I came to look at this place for purchase, the previous owner had 7 snowmobiles in the garage. btw- dog sledding it a good time however shoveling the roof is not. A-Jay 2 Quote

Leave it to the govt MnDOT (Minnesota Dept of Transportation) dumps a sh**load of salt on our roads here. Its over kill IMO. Its bad on our vehicles and in the spring when everything melts, and then it rains, where do you think it all goes? Right into our ditches, streams, creeks, lakes, and rivers. The University of MN conducted a research survey on the salinity of our Twin Cities metro area lakes years ago and found that some of these smaller ones will be so "salty" in 20 years that it will be impossible for fish and other organisms to inhabit them. Our neighbors to the east, Wisconsin, primarily use gravel and sand instead of salt on their roads in the winter. #saltmine Quote

I think they are going to use a brine solution instead of asphalt and concrete and just let us drive on salt roads they’ve never really done it before, no clue what’s gotten into them . Must have been some extra taxpayer dollars laying around they needed to spend Quote

Gotta support those MN companies....Cargill, HQ'd in Wayzata, is the largest supplier of road salt in the country. <- Former Cargill employee. Quote

"Lake effect" far surpasses any other dumb weather phrase here. It can get pretty interesting here on the south shore because the snow comes in bands. It could be complete white out, and a mile east the sun is shining. Weird stuff. A few years ago, Oswego got like 10 feet in 72 hours. We're usually cleaned out in a day and back to normal. My personal opinion is I prefer devastation over incessant 4" of snow every day. I like the struggle and the adventure. Quote
Super User gim Posted November 17, 2022 Super User Posted November 17, 2022 I am now hearing that the Browns-Bills game has been moved to Detroit on Sunday. The Bills play on Thanksgiving there anyways so it does kind of make some sense. 1 Quote

Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted November 17, 2022 Global Moderator Posted November 17, 2022 Coming down pretty good here. We’ve received around 2-2.5” since I got home just over an hour ago. We’re supposed to get 6-8” by Saturday. We’re almost to 6 right now. We might be getting 12” they’re predicting just south of us. ? 1 Quote
Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted November 18, 2022 Global Moderator Posted November 18, 2022 Well it’s looking like we received about 10” after it was all said and done yesterday. No school for 6poundbass today. He wasn’t bummed one bit. 1 1 Quote

Super User J Francho Posted November 18, 2022 Super User Posted November 18, 2022 Here, it's typically low temps, not snow that closes schools. 10" that hasn't been cleaned up by morning can do it though. Buses can't operate safely in that, especially if it's the sloppy lake effect crap. Quote
