WRB would you say a little more about not being able to cast 12 lb. braid effectively with a bait casting reel using MH rods?  Thanks.  (Why not?  What happens? )  Thanks.

PS: I have the Shimano Zodias 7'6" Glass Medium Heavy, Moderate for cranking.

12 lb braid is very small diameter line for a bait casting reel unless you go BFS shallow spool reel.

Deep diving crank baits we use in our California lakes that run 15’ to 20’ deep require long casts to run that deep. When you load up a casting rod enough to launch a 3/4 to 1 1/2 crank bait the light weight braid tends to kit and slow down mid air loosing the spooled line that can result in a backlash nearly impossible to remove easily.

If you/blow up the reel and damaged the line pulling out the loops it can severely weaken the line.

I used 10 and 12 lb Big Game Mono for decades, then changed to 11 on lb Armillo Nylon Mono, excellent casting line.

From personal experience I can say that if you 'think' you need a new rod, then you 'do' need a new rod.  :teeth:

I have a couple of glass crankbait rods. I have the Curado glass 7'2" mhm crank bait rod and a Dobyns Champion 7'3" CB glass.  Both do a excellent job casting crankbaits a long way and are a pleasure to fish with.  I'm very happy with both rods.  I just recently got a Alpha Anglers Chatterbound and it is very similar in action, feel and performance to Curado and Dobyns. I use 12lb Diawa Samurai FC or Tatsu FC for most of my cranking. If I am going XD6 size and up then I upsize to 14-17# test FC.

Understand quite well.  I have something like 25 rods that say MHF on them.  I had help, tho.  The Bait Monkey put my shoulder out several times when he twisted my arm.

The St Croix are nice, but a tad heavy. The medium is sweet.

lol. its terrible... after reading these post I found myself looking at glass rods... I don't even use that many crankbaits and when I do I use graphite moderate rods..

Megabass Valkyrie 71MH for 1/2-1oz

Megabass Tomahawk F4-71T  for 3/8 -5/8 oz.

Or if you want a lighter, longer more affordable option.

Daiwa Rebellion 73MH Glass.

I use CoPoly or Fluoro.

How do you like the Rebellion 73MH glass? I'm trying to figure out if I should buy that or the 7' M glass for crankbaits that dive up to 10'. I'm worried the MH will overpower squarebills but the M won't be enough for something like a DT10.

@SKFishing The 73 is perfect for squarebills, it has a shorter handle so you can target cast at shallow cover, the length however is perfect for your medium divers. I’d say 3/8 oz is the lowest I’d go on it, so no 1.0 sized squarebills, but your 1.5s and up are good.
