tommu Posted October 7, 2022 Posted October 7, 2022 The other day, i made a big oopsie and stripped the main drive shaft and possibly the handle nut off my 2021 Scorpion DC. I ordered the parts needed for it and I am ready for the repair coming up. Luckily, Debo’s fishing has a video where he had the same issue as me and I am going to be using that video as a reference for my repair. There is only one problem though, i looked into the schematics of the reel when ordering, and saw two pins and a spring that go through the main drive shaft. Debo’s video had his main shaft either already assembled or it wasn’t present at all. I ordered those parts as well, but I have no idea how to install them onto the main shaft. Attached are the parts in question. If anyone has any idea on how to install them, please let me know, thanks. Quote
garroyo130 Posted October 7, 2022 Posted October 7, 2022 Insert the spring then the caps on each end. Gently put on the gear. The nylon or whatever plastic gear is the only thing holding the pins/spring. It all ultimately gets held together by the c-clip that retains the bearing. 3 Quote

I see, any tips on taking out the c-clip and putting it back on? I heard they’re a real doozy and this will be my first time doing something like this. Quote
newapti5 Posted October 8, 2022 Posted October 8, 2022 Yes, Shimano reels have design like that. Just do as what mentioned above. Also, if you take a close look at part 42, you will see a couple of tiny grooves. Those are where the two tiny plastic pins are supposed to rest after installation, so part 42 would be fixed to the main shaft. 1 Quote

Insert the tip inside one of the notches and twist slowly till the clip pops off. Keep a finger on the clip so it doesn't fly off on you. For a reinstall, you can push it with a flat blade as well, preferably with a wider tip than the one use to remove it. Push at the front/center until it snaps in place. You may also want to do it inside of a plastic bag in the event it does fly on you. If you lose it, you can buy an assorted metric E-clip set on Amazon, runs like $8 and you get a lot of different sizes. Cheaper in the long run than buying them individually, plus you have other sizes in the event you need them. 3 Quote
garroyo130 Posted October 8, 2022 Posted October 8, 2022 Thats a bigger clip. Small screwdriver to remove just use your hands/fingernail to put it back on 1 Quote
PressuredFishing Posted October 8, 2022 Posted October 8, 2022 Yeah you will be fine taking the c clip off but do it in a zip block bag or something because they go flying like springs 2 Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 9, 2022 Super User Posted October 9, 2022 I suggest not doing this repair yourself. Dan Isaac at ReelEx is a expert Shimano reel tech and will fix your reel properly plus super tune. We also have DVT as a sponsor who can this for you. Tools for C- & E clips are inexpensive and easy to use, the right tool for job prevents loosing or damaging parts. Tom 1 Quote
SWVABass Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 E or c clips should have two small holes on either side. Pliers are made to open them as you squeeze the handles. This allows you to open and slide the clip off. Should be able to find them at a parts store or online. screwdrivers work but clips can and will fly. I only use that method for field cleaning chainsaws, don’t need the extra weight hiking mountains. 1 Quote
garroyo130 Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 That c-clip is usually the biggest one on the reel. You can even hold the back of the clip with your index finger and use the fingernail from both thumbs to press it out. No need to be scared of working on your reel. 2 Quote

Solution tommu Posted October 18, 2022 Author Solution Posted October 18, 2022 I was able to finish the repair by myself. taking off the c-clip was the hardest part. I got it slightly loose and it spun when i tried to put more pressure, even with my fingertip on. I got the c-clip off, but it was covered in grease so it didn't fly out. Damaged the outside parts of the bushing in the main shaft slightly because of how long it took to remove the c-clip but doesn't seem to affect my retrieve. Thank you all for the tips given. I now have my scorpion dc back in commission. ?? 2 Quote
